The Ranger
“A fighting man bred for the hunt”
The Ranger is the ultimate hunter, able to survive in the untamed wilderness as well as any animal and able to track their quarry to the far corners of the world. Rangers most often join up with bands of adventurers to hunt powerful creatures or join up with armies as scouts or soldiers that undertake special assignments requiring the Ranger’s unique skills. Some Rangers settle down and choose a particular forest to protect or work for kings as wardens, but most like to travel and hunt. Adventuring provides an opportunity to do both.
This is the description I came up with for what I would like the Ranger to be. A fairly general description, but fits such literary archetypes as the Dunedain of the North or any great beast hunter you see in most books.
I picture them leading adventuring bands after monsters that threaten the land or running behind the lines ambush operations on enemy armies. Kind of a like a fantasy special operations soldiers.
I would like them to be able to change up equipment depending on the need of the situation. If they were doing ambush operations, they might travel in light armor and rely on their bow and knife skills. Whereas if they were dragon hunting, they might pile on some heavier armor and use a spear and heavy sword for dealing with the dragon's reach.
The Ranger is a hard class to pin down. There are so many literary characters you could picture having levels of Ranger, but aren't sure they are actually Rangers.
I believe the Revised Ranger fits very well the literary archetype of the Elven Forest warrior. They can disappear before your very eyes. They are awsome with the bow. They are quick to react. Perfect elven fighter archetype. I wouldn't be surprised if Andy was basing this new Ranger off what he has seen elven fighters do in Lord of the Rings and other books with prominent elven characters.
