Book of the Righteous Dethroned!

I dispute neither A) nor B), but they're not relevant to the statement of mine you quoted. Since I have had no use for it other than admiring the cover (arguably the best cover on any d20 product), I would have sold it at a $30 loss except for said cover.

I might yet sell it, but I do so like that cover.

Hey, if that's the only reason your hanging on to it, make a photocopy and then sell me the book. I'll gladly pay $2 + s/h for it. :D

Hmmm. I scanned in the holy warrior and updated it to 3.5 and put it in my house rules.

Any chance you'd be willing to share this conversion? I have the book and have considered doing the same thing (using the Unholy Warrior update from "Book of Fiends" as a model) but just haven't gotten around to it.

FWIW, BotR gave me everything that it promised: a complete and usable pantheon "out of the box" complete with myths and logical connections. Add the Book of Fiends and you've got both sides of the "afterlife" coin. Granted, you've shelled out $70 bucks to do it, but I haven't regreted the purchases.

Too bad everybody didn't find as much value in it as I did.

I have to second this... I'd love to see the updated Holy Warrior. I know the Unholy warrior certainly benefited from the upgrade.

Considering it was a Silver ENnie winner, I think that's more important than the top ratings page. It was quite inevitable that the product get knocked down.

True, but the paladin was the standard. A standard that it would have to compare to if people were going to take the class seriously.
Since they were going the extra lengths of making an entirely new class, the 'standard' should have been dropped IMO.
It's still a nice class, but not all it could have been. Same with the Unholy Warrior.

[/off tangent]

As a footnote, I *have* used this book...

However, of the gamers I know personally, 11 out of the 12 of them that have this book have NEVER found any use for it in their games.

11 out of 12.

That's without going to my extended group of friends through professional and personal contacts.

I admire the book, it is one heck of a piece of work.

But most of the people *I* know, have found no practical use for it beyond use as a paperweight or doorstop.

Wow, I didn't realize how lucky I am... :o I've used the book in three different games. The whole book for one campaign, the holy warrior class in two other games... (one was FR, a paladin of Sune.) The last game I can't really remember... (Too many PbP games I guess.)

I have a feeling that Hellhound isn't alone in this, the campaign that I’m in that uses the pantheon, and the whole book, is a Solo PbP game and the DM wanted to use the book simply because he never been able to.

It’s also a pretty requested “game” type in the PbP forms leading me to believe that lots of people fall into that 11 out of 12 who are looking for a chance to enjoy it, or at least say that they’ve used it.

So yeah I guess I am special as it is one of the few books that I honestly did get my money out of. (Not that I keep track of such silly things.)

I can appreciate a negative review of a product i like, and i must say that there are some (2) good points made, some of the Holy Warrior combos are a bit front loaded (needs to be checked out when rewriting it to 3.5), and there are no prices for the magical items.

But to me this reads more as a piece written to be controversial and generate publicity, then it's written as a helpfull review. I don't dispute the authors opinions, but i have difficultygetting information out of the review that would help me make a decision whether or not i would like the product (something a lot of the other reviewers seem to pull of without to much difficulty)...

There's nothing particularly creative in the book, which is perhaps my biggest complaint

Edit - I made a horrible horrible mistake, confusing two people.... *blush*
