Isn't a demilich significantly more powerful than a lich? Having a body when one is a 17th level caster seems largely irrelevant.

Nope they are roughly just as powerful as each other. With Demilichs on the weaker end. (Unless the Lich willingly became a Demilich to increase their power like Acererak) it's better detailed in the new monster manual.

There are two versions of the Demilich. The one that is a result of a lich decaying too much or the Acererak style one.

I'd say make a cool altar and feed it spells, temporarily preventing you from casting x many spells (or spell levels)/day until it has absorbed enough power.

That, and lots of cold-blooded murder.

And eating hearts.
