Boots of Striding and Springing: Whats the rules on it?

Yes, but the rules say:

Supernatural is not normal speed. Its all in the rules, and its not the sages opinion.

Well, if you go there, what about when you are in armor? You "normal" speed is you unencumbered speed, right? So does it double you unencumbered spoeed and then you reduce it for the armor, or does it double your edcued-by-armor speed?

The simplest way to treat this is to consider "normal speed" your speed unaided by spells or items that change your speed. Simple, unabiguous.

A monk's "normal" speed at high levels iis his supernatural speed. If you look at a player who is playing a high level monk and ask "what is your normal speed," what answer do you think you'd get?

So if a creature has wings, would it double their flying speed too?

Technically, yes. Assuming it has wings - not wings granted by some item.

If boots can make you fly, why can't boots make you fly twice as fast?

Hammymchamham: Thanks, I think I've figured my way around the boards after a year.

Big ol difference.

As for the monk's 50+ speed not being doubled by the rules, there is nothing abnormal about a 20th level monk moving 90'. That is their normal speed. So it's doubled by Boots of Striding and Springing. So what if the effect is magic? It's inherent and normal.

Normal for whom? Is breathing underwater normal? Yes for an aquatic elf, but not a hill dwarf. By what standard are you judging "normal"? It is "normal" for a high level monk to be able to move at a blinding speed.

I might argue that the wording in the description should be changed, but that would invite people to direct me to the House Rules forum. We would both be right.:)

But for an aquatic elf, it's an [Ex] ability, not a [Su] ability.

A monk's 50' speed is [Ex]; a monk's 60' speed is [Su].

Indeed it is. But that's besides the point. The point is what's normal for some folks is unheard of for others. A demon with (Sp) Summon Demon is not blinked at (well, not for being able to bring other demons to bear at any rate); a commoner with that ability would be lynched. "Normal" is such a flexible adjective, it's absurd to think that it could be used to support the crux of an argument.

If Normal is such a concrete term whose interpretation is obvious, what does it mean exactly? Where does it say it in official sources?

Edit: I was about to make myself out to be a real jerk.

In the context of Expeditious Retreat? In the FAQ :) Where it says that "normal" doesn't include a Monk's [Su]movement :)

Has the price of 2,500 gp been changed? That's ridiculously low. Whenever you're building a character with starting cash of more than 50k gp or so, the boots are a must-have (unless you want boots of speed, I guess).
