Boots of Winter and Striding together costs how much ?

Rashak Mani

First Post
A NPC Orc of mine has the boots of striding and springing (6500 in errata ) with the Boots of the Winterlands abilities as well ( 2k-3k dont remember).

What should the price for this item be ? (I suppose adding abilities to the same item makes it more expensive than the sum of the parts )

Acording to page 243 of the DMG, it should cost 10% more than the sum of the price of the two items.

It's in the section at the bottom of the page, under "Multiple Similar Abilities."

"For items that take up a limited space, each additional power instead has a 10% increase in price. A 'Belt of Strength +4 and Dexterity +4' is better than a 'Belt of Strength' worn with 'Gloves of Dexterity'."

[Edit] So about 9900 gp. (6500+2500+10%) [/Edit]

10% total of the item I suppose... not to bad actually if you think about it ... considering limited space for something if you have many minor magical items.

I think 10% added on is really cheap. I believe if you just made the item from scratch it'd be more expensive since multiple p[owers tend to get expensive fast

From the DMG Errata
p. 243, In this text: "For items that do take up a limited space (such as a ring or a necklace), each additional power not only has no discount but instead has a 10% increase in price."
CHANGE "10%" to: 100%
So, about 11k gold.

I believe that section was errataed to read as 100% , instead of 10%. So if the first power separately costs x, and the second power costs y, when added to the same item, they cost x + 2y. A Belt of Strength +4 and Gloves of Dex +4 cost 16,000 each. A Belt of Strength +4 and Dexterity +4 would cost 16,000 + (2 x 16,000) or 48,000 gp.

Good catch. :) I really ought to start checking the errata first...

[Edit] As a DM, I would rule that the most expensive item has its cost increased. So in this case, the boots would cost 14,500 gp. (2500+(2*6000))

The Boots of Striding and Springing are actually 6000 gp in the errata, not 6500. [/Edit]

I actually do this the opposite if the item is being created brand new. For example, if you are putting two different effects on boots, the more expensive one goes on first and the cheaper one goes on second and has it's cost increased by 100%. However, if you already have some boots with one effect on them, and you want to add another via an upgrade, you have no choice, as the new one by default has it's cost increased.

I don't really see much of a problem with either method presented, as long as something is getting doubled.

However for my campaign, I calculate the total item's value with all powers added and make the spellcaster pay any difference required to enchant the new power into it. The total item's cost is figured at [most expensive power] + [2*second power] ad infinitum .

It may seem harsh and perhaps non-sensical to some but it makes for consistency and IMHO one could compare the multiple enchanting process to putting a square peg into a round hole = beat the peg enough and it will fit into the hole (i.e. paying the net difference between the old and the new item's cost). I think I termed it to one of my players as "magical synergy" or something like that. It also allows my players to keep the same magic items I hand out and enchant to their liking...as opposed to making magic items disposable/trade-bait.

Hope it makes sense.
