Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Hi!

Just saw this one today. There's been a lot of hype on the net over this movie, like it's the funnies movie of the decade or some such. How did it stack up to the expectations?

Yes and no. The movie was really, really funny - no Hollywood comedy in recent years I remember even comes close. But then again Borat works IMO better in small TV scetches, even though they did a fine job of creating an arc to the movie. But in a movie length format the shame just grows too big at times. I actually agree with the 'hyperboles' that Cohen is a comedical genius, but it's too much of a good things in one movie.

Oh, and the fight with Bagatov showed things that man was not meant to see

No wonder Kazakhstan is pissed

Well, Ali-G was funny. I can't imagine him stretched to movie length. I expect this is a DVD rental for me.

From what I've read on the internet, I get the impression most people don't realise it's them that's being made fun of, not Kazakhstan. Including Kazakhstan. Shame, really.

So you never saw the Ali G Indahouse? It was nowhere near as good as Da Ali G show but was okay for a purile laugh or three

Anyway Borat appeared in that movie too...

Ali G the TV show is genius. Ali G the movie was a disappointing dumb comedy. The joke was always this idiot interviewing important people, not so much the character itself. Minus the interviews, there's not much funny left.

From what a friend of mine that saw Borat has said, they corrected the problem somewhat this time around, mixing scripted segments with the unscripted embarassment that Borat is known for.

But there's a big difference between Ali G show and Indahouse. Ali G tv is the normal mockumentary set-up, while indahouse was a normal comedy. Borat the movie is similar to the TV sketches, not a 'normal' comedy.
