Bored on gaming day

Dog Moon

Adventurer
Okay, so we started gaming at about 1-2 pm today. Normally we start at about that time and play until like 12-3am early Monday morning. So a couple of hours ago we were giving this quest of finding a potion in some guy's house. So what do we do? Send in the Rogue/Wizard, of course. So basically, the adventure consists of those two while the other two of us doing other things. I was browsing the internet, checking out EnWorld, tried to install NWN, which failed cause of scratched disk.

Has this ever happened to anyone? What do you do in this type of situation?

Stay close to the game. Aid Another. The faster you find the potion, the quicker you get on to other things in which you will be more involved.

I do my best to find some reason for my character to do something. Creating distractions to keep the occupants busy, doing some background work so that we know what the potion is when it comes back, etc. Anything that will remind the GM that, hey, I'm here to have fun too.

If that doesn't work, and this is a semi-regular occurance, I'm probably inclined to have a chat about why I continue to show up for games...

Oh, I've done that one too. Also, random roll-offs.

"Your Diplomacy against my Knowledge (Arcana)."

"You do 3d6, I'll do d20."

As a DM, if only certain players are going to be involved in a scene, I have the other players play the NPCs. This allows me to narrate and referee. The players get a chance to play characters I would never allow as PCs, and it keeps everyone engaged. Additionally, it allows me to not have to force all the PCs to be together all the time.

We had a player several months ago that had his character die within the first hour of the session. He ended up browsing through some source books planning his new character, surfing EN World, etc. He might have left for the session, but he hosts the games! :)

about a month ago three of us had nothing we could do
it was talky time and none of us knew the local language so we stayed at a reputable establishment and played a new game we were inventing called Pekal Hold Em (5 points to the person who picks this setting). We bet in game coinage, played to our characters knowledge of how to, and made some coinage off a rather annoyed fighter, but he said that he'll win it back or earn the cash by being around us in adventuring, which he did.
We were at the table, and on our end played poker. The moment we got welcomed back into play, IC, we played one last hand.

We never stopped playing in the game, we just stopped walking around with the talky guys. I am also a nutter, I carry 6lbs of minis, a map, a case of 300 11.5gram poker chips, books, sheets, a sap of dice (approx 1lb) and some other games. If ever a game falls through I have enough to keep us entertained.
