Brew Potion question

Thurbane

First Post
In the Brew Potion feat is says "You can create a potion of any 3rd-level or lower spell that you know and that targets one or more creatures.". I'm just wondering, does this or does this not include spells with "Target: You", such as Expeditious Retreat or Mirror Image?

Also, by the exact wording of this feat, Oil of Bless Weapon couldn't exist, as it does not "target one or more creatures"...

Correct and correct.
.... that doesn't make sense, you can't agree with a question.

You can not make potions of personal only spells, like Mirror Image. Expeditious Retreat can be cast on other people so it's a valid option.

I'm not sure the source of your quote, but It doesn't seem to be the complete definition. You can create oils that affect objects. So Oil of Bless or Greater Magic Weapon are valid.

Yes, includes.

Yes, includes, I think (but see below).

As Brew Potion is written, this could not be created with said feat.

But Mirror Image targets "you", which is "one or more creatures". Odd that it wouldn't be included, but I see where you're going.

Creating Potions

This link refers to the rules of using potions and oils, not rules for creating them. Brew Potion specifically states you can create potions of spells that target one or more creatures. Bless Weapon targets a weapon, not one or more creatures.

Quoted from the SRD:

Mirror Image
Range: Personal; see text

Expeditious Retreat
Range: Personal

Creating Potions
Spells with a range of personal cannot be made into potions.

So, no, those are not legitimate options for potions. Another way of analyzing this is that when the rules mention a "spell that you know and that targets one or more creatures", they are being very literal in that the word "creature" actually has to appear on the target line of the spell. There may also be FAQ entry reiterating this, as well.

I didn't check every single one but I checked a dozen or so, and I didn't see a standard potion listed in the SRD with just range: personal. They all had creature touched or more.

Oh, I understand what you're saying, but Range seems to be irrelevant to Brew Potion. Brew Potion places requirements on Target, but I do not see any requirements on Range. Could just be poor wording.

Err yeah... I think the problem is the conflation of range and target... and I think I contributed to it!

The "no personal range spells" rule is actually in the DMG section on creating potions. Would have been nice to have in the "Brew Potion" feat description, but no such luck.
