Bringing Fantasy Worlds to Modern...What's Old is New Again

First Post
I was wondering if anyone has tried using FR, GH, SL, DL in the Modern rules-set?

Using an alternate Forgotten Realms (for example) advanced into the the "Modern Era of Rules" as opposed to using a alternate Earth.

Just curious.

My thoughts came to this when the thought of being able to use all the maps and aids I have of FR stuff for a modern game. Gunfights and car chases through the streets of waterdeep might be fun!

Speaking of elves, there is one cliche I would recommend you avoid. Almost EVERY time a world advances to the industrial age, EVERY elf on the planet goes eco-terrorist. EVERY elf.

Actually, I probably wouldn't allow elves to be gunslingers and/or gunsmith. That is probably a modern-day dwarves to delve in.

However, I would allow them to use modern compound bow. They are still nature lovers.

Sounds Kewel!

I think it's a great idea!
Greyhawk 2099 or some such!
Perpetrated Press' Arsenal book would be a great supplement for such a setting, all kinds of technomagic weapons and ideas.

Here's a quick peek into such a Campaign.....

General Grin and his elite team of Lizardmen Mercs, from the Vast Swamp, are hired to provide security for a team of researchers sent deep into the Amedio Jungle. What will they discover?
Is the Scarlet Brotherhood continuing with it's Genetic Experiments in spite of the Greyhawk Convention Treaty of 2088?
Will they make it back to show their findings to the United Oerth League?
Or will agents of the Pomarj sabotage their mission from the very beginning?

All kinds of interesting Campaign ideas....

Later,
Brutorz Bill

Hmm...I don't see why there is such a difference between bows and guns when it comes to nature. I mean, both can be used for hunting, and it's not like using a bow is going to make it any easier on nature.

Like the eco-terrorist elf thing, another thing about advancing fantasy settings seems to be a great desire to keep things as they are. Dwarves don't have to stay weaponsmiths forever. They could start the world's equialent of Microsoft (pun intended). Hell, they could even get involved in a large scale war and end up as a very pacifistic race! Similarly, elves could become friendly nature lovers, migrating to the cities to help other rces control pollution. In fact, you could go all the way and make them decadent, and having them as massive city builders and such.

Considering that Magic usually slows down the advancement of technology in the medieval period, you probably have two or three thousand years of history to play with. Why keep everything the same?

It's the nature of the elves. Even they don't use a crossbow, a successor to the bow and a clear predecessor to firearms.

They don't use the crossbow because you can fire much faster with a bow (at least my elves).

They probably woulnd't use PRG', shotguns and heavy machine guns, but (sniper) rifles and handguns are clearly in. You probably wouldn't encounter many elves with a revolver or a Desert Eagle, more with smaller autoloaders.

Take a look at the eldar from W40K: the use high-tech equipment, after all.
