I liked the episode, and felt it was a considerably better than the last couple. But it's undeniable that this storyline is failing in a couple ways, and hardly worthy of being the ultimate Buffy storyline:
1) The pacing is just horrible. Far too many episodes this season failed to advance the plot to any significant degree. This is further exacerbated by UPN's horrible schedule, throwing in reruns galore and draining away what little tension there is between episodes.
2) Far too many important characters are completely underused. Giles, Xander, Faith, and Willow seem to play barely any role in the story. If they had been completely written out of it, this story wouldn't be much different.
As for the scythe, I like it. It's designed pretty well, IMHO. In D&D terms, I guess it would be one of those odd one-handed double weapons. The stake part is essential, given her line of work, so it just doesn't work on a sword, but for a hand axe, it's fine. Calling it a scythe is certainly taking some liberties, but I'm fine with that, too. Yes, traditionally, a scythe is a farming tool, but it's also associated with the Grim Reaper. Slayer + scythe = makes sense to me (even if it's not really a scythe at all).
