Buffy [12-May-03]

I liked the episode, and felt it was a considerably better than the last couple. But it's undeniable that this storyline is failing in a couple ways, and hardly worthy of being the ultimate Buffy storyline:

1) The pacing is just horrible. Far too many episodes this season failed to advance the plot to any significant degree. This is further exacerbated by UPN's horrible schedule, throwing in reruns galore and draining away what little tension there is between episodes.

2) Far too many important characters are completely underused. Giles, Xander, Faith, and Willow seem to play barely any role in the story. If they had been completely written out of it, this story wouldn't be much different.

As for the scythe, I like it. It's designed pretty well, IMHO. In D&D terms, I guess it would be one of those odd one-handed double weapons. The stake part is essential, given her line of work, so it just doesn't work on a sword, but for a hand axe, it's fine. Calling it a scythe is certainly taking some liberties, but I'm fine with that, too. Yes, traditionally, a scythe is a farming tool, but it's also associated with the Grim Reaper. Slayer + scythe = makes sense to me (even if it's not really a scythe at all).

I thought the beginning of the episode was nearly unwatchable, so my wife and I played some cribbage during the rest and only half watched. I thought the second half the episode was at least margnal, but then again I was getting my ass kicked in cribbage and was not very focused on the show.

The best line once again went to Andrew, after a serious discussion with Anya about humanity's hopelessness and how he imagines he'll probably die in the upcoming battle, while they raid an abandoned hospital for supplies:

"Wheelchair fight?"

Followed, of course, by a shot of the two of them playing "bumper cars" in wheelchairs. :D

Gotta love that Andrew.

Thank you. Here, I thought I was the only one screaming at the television, "Now go whack him in the head with your +12 Urgrosh!".

And I thought Buffy watched horror films too. This is a rookie error.

Yeah, but that's not the heroes' style. :p I was thinking the same thing, tho.

If I ever get the chance to write an episode of a TV show, in the end the hero WILL decapitate his fallen foe the week before the season finale. :D

... to his credit, Joss did do this in Firefly (kick, slurp!).

I don't know, I put "thank God we're hot chicks with super powers. Takes the edge off..." as a great BtVS line.

There is another explanation for the preview. The First can take the form of anyone who's died, after all.
