Buffy 24 Feb 03

New Angel episode is next week :)

I actually ended up enjoying this episode more than I thought I would from what the previews showed. I think this is Andrew's best episode & he acted great in it.

It was also great to see one more romp in the hay between Xander & Anya.

Just wished the episode wasn't pre-empted by the basketball game, which caused me to miss the first few minutes. I hate missing any part of my shows.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I love Andrew. In many ways, he is us, the geek audience, wanting to be a part of the Scoobs.

I liked seeing into his little fantasy world, and getting more of his backstory in Mexico and so on.

The thing with the tears to seal the Seal was a little hokey, but it worked for me. It was a powerful moment, and Tom Lenk did a good job with it.

In my eyes, he's found the redemption that he was looking for. I don't know if Buffy and the Scoobs will agree, however.

I wonder whether Robin intentionally tried to stake Spike or if he was momentarily possessed by the madness pervading the high school?

The dialogs between Anya and Xander were well done, and a nice wrapup to their relationship. Again, strong performances by Emma and Nick made it work.

Now let's move on to some plot!

Compare that with the current Angel arc, where every episode has been interesting, fantastic television that seems to be progressing just right.
Yes, the current Angel season has been better than the current Buffy season. But comparing season 7 of a show to season 4 of a show isn't quite apples to apples. Not that anyone is really doing that but I figured I'd mention it. :)

On to this week's Buffy...

As others have mentioned, Andrew was great. Tom Lenk is adding alot to the show on a weekly basis. I think the Andrew character is important because a show like Buffy needs changes and challenges along the way both for the main characters and any others that come along. Buffy's job has been the hardest as she must toughen up all these new people around her in a short amount of time to the level of the Scoobs that have been there from the start. Not easy.

Andrew has been the first to pass the test of the new members of the "Army." Kennedy only got a taste last week when Willow shattered her reality a bit. The other potentials who were challenged are now dead. Wood is still being initiated despite all his experience. Now, Andrew (as well as the newly invigorated Spike) can be an asset to the team.

All that said, I was very entertained by this episode. There were some of the biggest laughs in this one in the entire season. I have to say that the previews didn't make this one look very good at all. That is odd because every ep that UPN previews that looks like it will stink has been good. Odd.

I enjoyed this episode, but am really ready for this storyline to get moving. It has been many many episodes since they really did anything to fight the first. The scene with Buffy and Andrew was excellent and I have to agree Andrew was well portrayed.

Unlike other seasons with lots of filler episodes with totally off topic baddies and events, this season has completely stalled the storyline and not really done anything completely off topic. It just seems slow. Nobody is doing anything. Where is Giles? I must have missed what he is off doing.

Am I the only one who really dislikes Kennedy. She seems poorly written and acted and there has been no explaination of why she is the "leader" of the recruits. She has all of the qualities of a 1980's female action star, a big mouth and nothing else.

I forgot, since we are speaking of Angel, here is a quote from CNN.com

Still to be decided: whether the producers and UPN will proceed with a new "Buffy" spinoff, or whether the franchise will simply end. WB Entertainment president Jordan Levin said Tuesday he's hopeful but not certain that "Angel," a "Buffy" spinoff launched in 1999, will be back next fall.

I love Kennedy! She's great... the exact opposite of Tara. No powers, but very aggressive. She's the perfect slayer-in-training!

And I'll shamefully admit that my favorite part of this episode was the make-out session between Kennedy and Willow (and Andrew's subsequent praise of Zander's craftsmanship on the recentlly-repaired window behind them).

One thing bothered me about this episode... the student who "exploded" from stress (that was the "tomatoes" hitting the window) was pretty horrific... and Buffy made a joke about it! ("He should have gotten that foot rub!"). I thought that was a bit out of character for her.

The Principle definitely meant to try and kill Spike. And of course, he's justified in doing so.

No Angel tonight.. we get to watch a remake of The Lone Ranger with same Dawson's Creek reject. Ugh. One more week till Faith!

I know a few people that don't like Kennedy, but I don't think she's that bad. She's the "leader" because she's pushy, and they're meek.
How many meek characters does a show centered around a Slayer really need?

I don't think Kennedy is well developed, but I like that she's at least trying to get involved. Even if it does mean she's mostly going to either die or turn out to actually be Evil. :)

FOr this episode, I liked it mostly, though it was kind of bland. Spike's "the lights behind you" scene was fine.

I also don't think Andrew has a crush on Xander. I think he was sweet talking everyone into letting him film. He manipulated them all, except Buffy, who scares him. Was quite fun :)

Especially the kitchen scene "and this girl, whose name I don't remember".

I have to echo what everyone else has said already. The episode was hilarious. The scene at the beginning with him on the toilet filming and Anya walking in saying, "Why don't you masturbate like the rest of us?" had me in tears.

Of all the potentials, I think Kennedy is the least ready to be slayer. Because she wants to be the slayer. Her tough act reminds me of Kendra a bit. It's somehow out of place.

Of course, Buffy is acting that way now, but she believes she will pass down the slayer line when she dies. I think things will change for her once she realizes that responsibility lies with Faith. (Although i guess DYING isn't really a responsibility.)

But it opens the possibility of Buffy, Faith, and the other potential facing the First and then Faith dying and having the slayer power jump around to the potentials. (Some on the boards mentioned that a few weeks ago.)

I'm still waiting for Dawn to be called as a slayer. When she saw her mother's "ghost" (debateable that it was the First), she said "She won't won't choose you." What's funny is Buffy shouldn't even get the choice!

in a conversation last night, the topic again came up about just drowning the current slayer, then the next one, etc. and bringing them back. You'd have a bunch of em!

As was also mentioned though, if the slayer's power is from a demon, and it passes to the next one, shouldn't Buffy just be powerless at this point?

I loved how Andrew blew off Buffy's big speech. That was so funny. I was thinking about how many times I've read on ENWorld that no one can take Buffy's speeches seriously.
