Buffy [5-May-03]

AH, at last it can be told...

[possible spoiler]

The axe is apparently called The Scythe, and is the traditional weapon of the Slayers, if the comic Joss writes can be believed. It is wielded by the main character there, and is supposedly pretty powerful, though it hasn't been used very effectively there, either.

See for yourself what I mean.

Apparently they make reference to the ending in Buffy in Fray, but it's not that reliable, since Joss may want to do sequel series or movies, or the like. We'll see.

(Though, when the Caleb/ Buffy stuff started, I commented "oh look, a matrix preview" just as the friend said "when did Buffy learn Wire-fu?" so that could have been less derivative.)

Right.. and the The Matrix is derivative of Schopenhauer and Schopenhauer is derivative of Hindu mythology. Let's face it, a Fong Sai Yuk, The Matrix aint. Buffy did a few exaggerated flips, which would be consistent with her exaggerated strength. Big whoop.

Nyah, it was the slow motion hovering and such.

which one of these four suspects is up to no good?

Probably none of them. All that's required is a Bringer willing to die. And it seems pretty obvious that all of them are willing to die. I was a little surprised they trusted it's word at all. But then again, they are desperate...

I actually fell asleep for about ten minutes before the "sex" scenes during this episode. The Willow's sex scene and the last ten minutes were the best.

ok im thinking Faith has to use the axe. Why? Two episodes left to go and we still havent seen the sword buffy is weilding in the "Goodbye To You" Credits (God between this show TWICE and Dawsons Creek, Michelle Branch is making some money!)

Anywho, After watching Buffy and Angel and making the Andrew like comment to my friend and husband "Man, id like to be in a three way with Lilah and Faith" and their blank stares, i realized, its the bad girl in them that turns me on. Its not so much them being girls as it is leather and kicking ass. Im a sucker for a bad guy. The sex part grosses me out, but Faith and Lilah i hope stick around.

Anywho, back from my tangent ...

Dawn is the key. Yes. But she is human and the gate she opened is gone now. So she doesnt open much of anything.

And it isnt bad writing. She has ALWAYS been into magick. She wanted Tara and Willow to teach her but her mom had a cow (The Real Me) and she cast a spell all by herself when Joyce came knocking (Conversations with Dead People and Forever). Dawn has been on research squad for a while and doing independant things.

I just wish everyone would cut some slack. Everyone is griping about how this sucks and it hasnt been the same. Well ya know what. Bite it or dont watch. You keep coming back every week. if it hasnt been the same in so many years, what make syou think this one episode will make it better.

Sure there is some stuff i dont agree with but Buffy is the one show almost everyone i know (and then some) tunes in to watch every week. And every thursday, we get together and talk about how Joss has done it again.

Every season has a theme. Havent you got that yet? And have you not got this seasons theme?

Despair.

Willow cant do much. Why? Shes afraid she will become a killer again (Killer in Me). Xander cant do much anyway. "Do you know what its like to have friends in the spotlight and not be there? Ive lived so close to the spotlight for 7 years. We heal, Dawn. We're there when they need us." Xander isnt superhuman and Caleb has tried to take him out. Im sure we will see why soon.

Giles is acting very Giles. Hes just tired as is everyone else. Buffy said it Tuesday. Shes tired. They all are. Sure there have been 'apocalypses' before (The end of the world. Again?) but this time its serious. I mean when was the last time we saw Sunnydale become a ghost town.

Never.

Angelsboi, I think you're taking this a little personally. Just because someone is critical, doesn't mean they're criticizing. Just because you love a show, doesn't mean you have to love everything about it or that there aren't serious plot holes, poor writing, poor acting, poor characterization, or whatever. I don't recall anyone in this thread saying that the show sucks.

Personally, I find threads where everyone says they love the show, and love this part and that part, incredibly boring. Of course, threads where people are mercilessly ripping a show to shreds are sick in their own way, too, but that's not my impression of this thread.

Of course we're going to pick apart little things. If we didn't, this thread would have only two replies, and be buried on page 3.

fair enough. I used to pick plots too till i discovered a site that lays everythign to bear and shows the show's continuity.

i mean, ive been watching faithfully for 7 years and my hubby picks on me when i get tearry eyed and says "Hunny its just a show."

It may be just a show but ... nevermind. Its hard to explain

That's cool. Diehard Buffy fans are always welcome here! And yeah, it's "just" a show, but it's definitely been one of the best shows on TV, breaking lots of new ground in a lot of ways.

But it ain't perfect.;)

I don't think you can do a half-decent translation without knowing something about the language. It's much more than the alphabet, it's understanding the words, the grammar, the syntax, and even cultural references.

Look at it this way: How many times have Willow or Wesley discovered something important because someone had screwed up a translation? At least a couple times, I'm sure. You can't guess when it comes to magic.

she didn't do a half-decent translation ... (oops, I don't really remember now) ... she knew the basics of the spell, but not the exact wording (did she?) or context.

I'm sure when they came to doing preparations they used the translated version instead of dawn's interpretation.
