Buffy: Riley?

That was a quality episode.

"Wait, he wasn't evil? I saw him here beating people up and assumed he was evil. That's what he's like when he's nice?"

"Your new boyfriend? I don't like him."
Of course Angel wouldn't like him. Remember when Buffy showed up in LA and they had to track down (iirc) Faith? And Buffy was all like "ooh, I have a new boyfriend, ooh, I'm over you now", to which Angel replied that he WASN'T over her because he COULDN'T! And told her to stop being a spoiled brat!

Ah, good stuff...

Wow! Didn't see that coming.

You're not pulling my leg are you? That's pretty wacked.

I've always wondered if there were some issues with the actor, or one of the major writers just didn't like the character, because the way they wrote him out of the show in season 5 was pretty awful, and so was his one-episode return in season 6.

I remember in one of the DVD commentary tracks Joss being surprised at how there really wasn't a lot of interest in Riley as the boy friend. Especially when the various spells and situations kept putting Buffy and Spike together and they sent sparks (usually not the good kind) flying.

So they just kinda went with it.

But my memory sucks. I know they talk about it at some point in the DVD commentary tracks.

As Chun-Tzu points out, Riley was always supposed to be treated badly by Buffy, ultimately, and was never intended to be a permanent cast member. That being said, from what I remember, fan reaction to Riley was pretty bad- a lot of people (or at least a vocal minority on the net) hated the character and didn't want him to be with Buffy. I expect that if the character had had a huge following, he might have been inducted more permanently into the cast (as happened with other characters over the course of the show), though I doubt he would have remained Buffy's significant other permanently.

Myself, I didn't really care for Riley at first, but the character grew on me quickly, and became one of my favorites on the show. I was very disappointed to see him go, and wish that more had been done with he and Buffy in the "reunion" episode in Season Six between them (there was too much emphasis on his wife in that one, who was played by a really bad actress).

Frankly, I felt that Riley was one of the best developed characters on the show, to the point where he (IMO) seemed to overshadow some of the long-running characters, such as Xander, during the early half of Season 5. Blucas has that old-school Cary Grant sort of charm, I think, and really deserves to get more high-profile roles than he seems to.

I never cared for Riley until I rewatched the season on DVD. For some reason the second time around he grew on me. I just finished watching Season 6 on DVD and must say that I found his wife is quite annoying. Proabably the character I missed the most after they left the show was Oz.

I think Riley suffered from post-Angel syndrome. People still clung to the Buffy-Angel relationship (which ended pretty badly in the prior season) and rejected Riley from the get-go.

My problem with Riley wasn't really directly him. I hated the Initiative greatly, and the general feel of season 4 soured me on the show. Frankly I only really like 1-3, so Riley being a part of the sucky (IMO) seasons kind of killed any interest I may have had in his character.
