That should be 'a fourth slayer' (Faith was the third) and the reason there wasn't another is because the slayer line past through Faith and another wouldn't be called until she died (it didn't matter f Buffy died or not).

I meant the third active Slayer. Faith is actually, like, the 1000th Slayer or something (I don't think they ever indicated just how long the Slayer line had existed, other than "a long time").

I never understood that the whole "Slayer Line" was attached to Faith (and to Kendra before her). I had assumed that, while there was probably a third Slayer out there somewhere, the writers simply didn't feel that introducing her was worthwhile ("been there, done that"). I kept expecting someone, Willow or Xander, to make some off-hand remark, wondering who or where the third Slayer might be, and whether they should go look for her. It never happened though, and I was disappointed; one thing I admired about Whedon & Co was that they always seemed on top of the little nits that people like me might pick.
