or you could convince your GM to allow you to use 3.0's favored class (illusionist).
Or play an arcane gnome (fav class Wizard; some other modifiers, including +2 Int and -2 to IIRC Wis).

Since I just had to look up something in the same Dragon anyway, here's the lowdown:

Arcane gnome
  • As normal gnome, except:
  • +2 Int, -2 Wis (in addition to the normal gnome modifiers)
  • Instead of speak with animals, they get Use Magic Device as class skill for all their classes
  • Fav Class: wizard

Illusionist. Classic Gnome class. Works well with their tricky racial traits. I highly recommend you make Dexterity the second highest ability score for several reasons. One is combat wise, its good to make Illusionists focus on missile weapons--don't ignore Spears as a flexible choice.

Add to this the recommendation of Improved Initiative as a 1st level Feat. That with the (hopefully) Dexterity bonus insures the Gnome Illusionist can cast a spell or fire missile weapon without provoking an Attack of Opportunity.

Another one I find intriguing with 3.0 is a Ranger. Of course, Rogue is another natural class.

I´d stick with just Illusionist or plain wizard. With Invisibility you have all the sneaking you´d want, and except psionics, nothing can be used for trcking better than magic.

I agree. After playing 3.0 for a while, my friends and I have decided that most prestige classes just water down the regular classes. You're better off going for 9th level wizard spells. I played a gnome illusionist, and it was a lot of fun. Try to think of clever ways to use your spells for practical jokes! I used Ventriloquism to convince another PC that the shield he found was magical and could grant wishes! :p

How did the gnome handle an undead combat situation???
