Sonny is a bit more emotionally complex than Spenser, and even feels the need to work out her relationship with her ex-husband with a psychologist (guess who?).
I read the Chandler co-written book as well ("Poodle Springs," I think). It was completed by Parker after Chandler's death, and there's a point, about half-way thorugh, where Marlow effectively morphs into Spenser ("Spenser," "Marlow," get it?!). He gives up on the lonely solo road and settles down with a woman, just like Spenser. You can see the authorial voice shift as you read, and see how the themes change from Chandler-esque to Parker-esque by the end.
