Call of cthulhu D20 or not so D20?

Urm.. no. If the guard's roll result is lower than the burglar's roll and lower than the guard's skill rating, then the guard will hear the burglar. The same result will, in fact, not occur.The only way the same result would be true with the guard's roll being lower than the burglar's, is if said roll is still higher than the guard's skill rating.

I'm talking about d20 here, you can tell because I mention DCs in my post. If you essentially agree with me, what is the point of belaboring your philosophical opposition to the point?

D'oh! I misread your post entirely! I guess that's what I get for trying to make sense of written English after an 8-hour, sleep-deprived, HALO LAN party.

Oddly enough, I think the opposite is true. CoC d20 is great at catching the Cthulhu flavour in a one shot, but over a campaign the various D&Disms start to grate a bit, such as having your hit points go up whenever you learn something about archaeology. BRP is a bit harder to peg for one shots, but performs really well over a campaign.

I have trouble understanding this because BRP is the system that allows a starting character to be an expert in his field. That along with the deadliness of its combat make it an excellent system for one shots. D20 has a gradual increase in skill and power that allows characters to grow and survive multiple adventures. I believe that BRP remains closest to Lovecraft's original work, but that D20 more easily allows for campaigns involving the same characters in multiple adventures.

Jdrakeh, my posts were to better understand the opposed skill system in the Keeper's Compendium. They were not meant to imply I think either D20 or BRP is a superior system.
