Campaign Wikipedias

Well, in another thread MarauderX brought up the idea of using a wikipedia for your campaign. I thought this was brilliant and immediately established one here. It's obviously going to take a while to make it very thorough- so far I've only got two entries, and I have only a cursory knowledge of how to edit and format stuff there so far- but I figure if I add a couple of things a day and start off with a simple, shallow view of stuff first, it'll eventually fill in.

Has anyone experimented with this? How did it work? MarauderX, if you happen to see this thread, could you pop in with a few of your experiences with it?

I think a Wiki can work well for this. When I was running a campaign I used Wikidpad, a offline Wiki of sorts, to organize campaign and session information. The immediate linking between pages is great and puts you only a click or two from where you want to be at any time. Using a web based one wouldn't be much different I wouldn't think. I have been quite happy with using a Wiki to organize my campaign notes and information.

It looks like you have a good start even with just two entries so far. Once you get used to the syntax and keep adding you will soon have a great reference for your world online and with easy access for all who are interested.

For people who want sites for their campaigns (I've done in in the past with my Mystara campaigns, now sadly offline), I think this is an excellent model.

Is there wiki software out there that people can host on their own sites, or does it always have to be hosted by the proprietary software owners?

MediaWiki is free and the one most folks will recognize. I've played with it on a site I host and it works pretty well and relatively easy to pick up. You could easily get this up and running on a server host you may already have.

Well now I owe you *and* MarauderX :D

I just scrapped the college campaign setting this week and was despairing at the thought of many months of campaign creation ahead. Now I think I'll split the work with the players and use the Wiki to keep it in line.

How is this different than posting notes on a Yahoo page or even in plain old HTML??? Does it automatically hyperlink things in a document/page?

Please excuse the ignorance.

Are there any other offline wikis besides the wikidpad? I tried that today but couldnt quite get the hang of it because I don't like how it does wikiwords. They have to be mashed together with multiple caps, and then assumes that the second cap is the start of a new word.. but for me they arent =/

I dislike the Deities wikiword being made into Dei Ties, or D Eities, or Deite S or whatever. Maybe i'm being lame.

I like the wiki idea and want to use one but I'm not sure if that particular one is for me. I'd like it to be offline because that makes accessing and whatever easier for me since that's who I want it for.

I did go sign up for a free wiki at the place Jester has his, but I probably wont do anything with that for a bit yet.

There was another program that I found earlier called Golden Section Notes, but that's more than I'm looking to spend.

Anyone else willing to link their online wiki so that I could maybe look over them for organization ideas?
