Campaings What are you Running?

Buffy the Steampunk Slayer!

Well, this has been temporarily delayed by my wife getting and running the actual Buffy RPG (first game tomorrow!) and my acquisition of Mutants & Masterminds, but I hope to have it ready soon.

In BtSS, Charles Babbage made a deal with the devil (which he actually attempted to do, I never knew history could actually be interesting), ushering in the Steam Age, the Industrial Revolution, and the Information Revolution all at once!

Now the world is powred by steam. Difference Engines (computers, sort of) communicate over the Enginet, a vast steam-powered communications network. A lot of advances in technology over the last hundreds years have been seriously delayed as steam and Babbages inventions are adequately meeting the needs of the world.

Now add in the mythology of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Demons, vampires, the Slayer...and what was the terrible cost of Babbages' philanthropy?

I'd eventually like to expand this setting to include Martian Crusade, a steam-powered version of Mecha Crusade.

In this setting, Britain has taken to colinizing the moon and nearby planets, allowing America to gain its' independance without any bloodshed.

When the strong allies America and Britain try to jointly colonise Mars, they find HG Wells' aliens waiting to defend thier home, and invade the Earth!

It's Martian tripods vs steam powered mechs, with a good possibility of Burroughs' green martians making an appearance as well. (shamelessly inspired by recent issues of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)

Of course, this all assumes I get a break from my current Star Wars campaign. What a nice dilemma to face! ;)

The Chronicle

We are getting ready to run a campaign inspired by the TV show, "The Chronicle". Instead of a print medium, the characters run a tabloid-style website. They seek out and investigate weird stories, and report them to the public. The stories are bizarre and often unbelievable, but they all have a basis in truth. For example, they might go to investigate a "bat-boy" in the midwest and discover a werebat population growing due to bites from diseased bats. Maybe they'd head over to Maine to investigate a reported 57-lb housecat, to find that there has been a series of missing persons cases... :D

JPL,

Clinging doggedly to my detirmination to rip off this awesome idea, I have one question:

Was the army awoken? I know from your previous posts that your heroes faced giant albino apes, but did they have to face any part of the serpant man army itself?

Also, did you give Xan any sorcerous powers?

Thanks!

Ah, you flatter me. I'll post a detailed synopsis in the next day or two.

The army was awoken just enough to start slowly climbing down from their stone pedestals.

The heroes, in the meantime, were dealing with four of those albino apes, plus Xan's harem of concubine/assassins, plus two key henchmen --- a Hungarian saber master named Gregor [who squared off against Takashi the samurai] and a massive Scotsman named Angus [who was doing a pretty good job Brawling, but after getting stabbed a couple of times switched to Combat Martial Arts].

The heroes began this encounter unarmed and chained to posts in the lair of Xan. Trevor the Aussie's skill with a lockpick proved essential --- once he dislocated his shoulder so he could reach his picks. Trevor managed to finish two apes armed only with his trusty knife and years of monkey-fighting experience.

I ultimately decided not to stat Xan out at all --- I knew that he would make a mysterious escape as soon as things went sour. I see Xan as the classic scientist/occultist, like Fu Manchu or Dr. Doom --- not actually slinging magic missiles, but able to use magic items and interpret scrolls.

Your steampunk idea is good --- if my Xan game were meeting regularly, I'd love to introduce some alt-history and steamtech elements...

My world is basically just standard D&D except due to a twist involving the god of time several years ago the world has now become a spin art of different time eras. (Though things tend to stay where they belong. Which means you encounter very few Gunslingers riding raptors.)
