That is my take on it, too. Certainly as a Dm, if I want a wolf that is a druid, I’m having one. The tougher part is whether the option is open to PCs and their companions, as in the thread example. I strongly suspect that the rules, as RC says, discourage animals from having levels. But what IS a wolf with 3 intelligence, exactly? As mentioned above, it seems to no longer be an animal, nor an AC by extension. Just a bright former wolf, I suppose. Would it take a level and stay with an adventuring group? I think 3 intelligence is enough for it to know to retire instead...
Can a wolf take class levels without being awakened?
