D&D 5E Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Wait, why?

Because that's what the rules st... wait... looks like they may have changed that in October...

Excellent, I was wrong! :D

Looks like they removed the 30ft restriction (which was in most of the playtests and previous editions of D&D), which means Rogues come up significantly in ambush/long-range situations, so long as they keep that gone. Need to double check 101413, though, I only have 091913 right here.

So they're definitely closer than I thought - Fighter is ahead on damage even in an ambush, but the Rogue can be a good sniper.

Ruin Explorer: I can think of plenty of situations outside of the standard "combat encounter" framework where a Rogue could shine more brightly than a Fighter as an archer: an actual assassination job, a running battle across the rooftops, a sentry position watching for pursuers, a performance to impress the duchess. Any of these would suit the Rogue's combination of combat chops and skill mastery.

Please can you explain the bolded ones a bit further? What's edge he has?

The first two are actually within the standard "combat encounter" framework, I note - but Rogue could do very well as they involve running around a lot, which he is good at.

I'm going to assume the +5 bonus from expertise if he chose those as his/her expertise skills.

Didn't Expertise become "double proficiency bonus", which makes it not as good at low levels, but amazing at high?
It will be in the final version(as far as we know), but since this entire discussion was about the October playtest, I figured I'd use that number.

Rumor also has it that proficiency starts at 2 and ends at 6 in the final version. So, it does start out smaller.

The idea of the first is to set up as a hidden sentry, picking off any individual who comes too close, or sounding the alarm if the risk becomes too great. For the second, I'm thinking an epic performance or contest that includes various feats of tumbling and agility and culminates in shooting an apple off of someone's head. Another option is an obstacle course, where the winner gets a valuable treasure. Whatever - my point is that essentially any situation that combines archery with skill use will be great for an archer-rogue. DPR isn't all there is to it.

Edit: Sorry, thought I'd pressed submit on this a while ago. Whatever the Mastery bonus ends up being - Rogues have more skills that Fighters and are better at them. Skills can be used in concert with combat abilities in various contexts. I'm not trying to provide an exhaustive list, just show that these situations exist.
