Can anyone think of any reason not to be a Rogue?

If your character is going to be solo, I'd recommend rogue with one level of cleric. As one of your domains, take magic.

The rogue benefits are obvious - just pick several skills to emphasize and take your character in that direction (make sure to max out UMD and tumble).

The cleric adds the ability to heal yourself, use divine and arcane spells and items, and (hopefully) gives you a temple to turn to when times get tough. Of course the temple will want services from you, but that's a great way to get involved in some adventures, so everyone wins.

It was a joke lighten up, and people wonder why there are so many lurkers around here when you cant even post a joke without someone getting all offended and stuff.
Razzin' frazzin'! Lost my earlier reply. Anyway, what in the world makes you think I'm offended?

Only reason I can see (and this works better when it's not solo) is if there are a LOT of rogues in a party. :)

I played in an all rogues party once. it was different . . . but we were a lot more lethal then a party of fighters would have been. tag team backstabbing . . . what a concept!

I can think of no better character to play in a solo adventure then a rogue. :D

Tone and content

I guess it was what you wrote about the pigeonholing, I wasnt trying to pigeonhole anyone or anything. I was simply using a classic gaming sterotype to make a humorous suggestion or observation. Your reply was one of annoyance, ergo you stated that you dont care for the pigeonholing (spelling or is this even a real word?) of the rogue class. Maybe offended wasnt the right choice of words for me to use, but arent you taking something meant as a joke a little too seriously?
In my post I never said that you must be unprincipled or evil to be a rogue, you simply assumed that.
In fact my post doesnt even have the word thief anywhere in it, nor does it say anywhere in it that you have to be a con man.
It does imply at the end that the party paladin might have a problem with what means you use to gain a good end, it doesnt say however that what the rogue may be doing is in any way evil or wrong.
The rogue uses subterfuge and deception as well as his stealthy skills to attain the end he desires, where as the paladin is usually more motivated to take a direct route. Is either way wrong?
Not as long as your having fun.

Off-topic, but...

Now you've got someone who is as good as the best craftsman in his league in 6 different crafts. There are two reasons for doing this that I can think of

1) He is gready. This means that he's taking business from these other peopole because it's easier to go to one person then 6. It also means that the crafters in town do not like this guy. Therefor we are left with at the core the descpicable rogue. No matter how kind, just and nice he is.

2) He is some type of con man or spy or something that has to be able to play different roles and play them very well. This one we can all see is very rogueish.
Or 3) he's a renaissance man. :D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

On-topic, go with the bard, Irda Ranger. Or urban ranger. Maybe even multi-class them.

Great feedback!

Thanks for the great feedback!

Actually (to answer Joshua) I don't mind playing a rogue at all, I think its a great class. I was just feeling a little "forced" into it, because I couldn't think of a great alternative.

I only have the Core books, FRCS, PsiHB and the WotC splats, so the urban fighter and other alternatives will have to wait.

Angcuru ... could you explain? You mean a Rogue/Psion? I usually use the CharGen that came with the PHB (I know, I know ... I'm just used to it) and so I kind of forget about the Psychic ones :)

I like the idea of the Rogue/Monk, I may have to give that some thought. The skill lists complement each other of course, and the good saves are always useful.

....

Fellas, fellas ... the "Rogue" is a very flexible class for all its skill points. Anyone who seems to have eyes in the back of their head and specializes in hitting people for maximum effect when they aren't looking ... well, just something to think about.

Irda Ranger

PS - Oh, are there any rule changes to "Urban Ranger"? I wouldn't want to take just one level of it for the feats (just doesn't feel fair), but if there's a link to something, that would be cool.

Thanks again.

Rangers, as presented in the PHB, are a great urban class. Give them Improved Unarmed Strike and, with two-weapon fighting you've got a good brawler. All those animal and plant spells are great for spying. All that you need to do is convince your DM to allow Wilderness Lore to work in the urban jungle.

I like the idea of a rogue/monk.

take combat reflexes, mobility, etc., and you got yourself a sneak attack machine. now YOU TOO can sucker punch the guard in the back of the head and run away at top speed.:D
