Can con-loss kill you?

If a spell does something like 8 point of con damage, can the resulting loss of HP kill you?

For instance, assume you cast a spell that does 8 points con damage on a wizard. The wizard has 3 HP per level. Does the spell kill them, or does the rule that you always get at least 1 HP per level come into play?

For instance, assume you cast a spell that does 8 points con damage on a wizard. The wizard has 3 HP per level. Does the spell kill them, or does the rule that you always get at least 1 HP per level come into play?

The rule comes into play; his maximum hit points can't drop below his hit dice. However, if he's taken actual hit point damage already, that damage could drop him unconscious (if it's more than his hit dice) or kill him (if it's more than his hit dice plus nine).

Of course, if the wizard's Con is 8 or less, he doesn't need to worry about his hit points because the attribute loss will kill him.
