Can horses Spider Climb?

I'd say you'd have to have wild empathy and speak with animals at a minimum before you could even try to get a horse to spider climb. And even then it'd probably kick you in the nuts when it found out what you wanted. And you'd deserve it. :)

Does anyone else get the mental image of a horse flying through the air, red cape fluttering in the wind. I can even see the final showdown with Zod...
Quickly joined by a flying white dog, orange cat, and monkey.

In any case, they actually included a trick for this in Races of Stone. Special Movement (DC 20), to let an animal use a movement mode it wouldnt normally have.

yay. This thread directly affects the party in my campaign. They're romping through the demonweb, and the Holy Liberator has his horse along. The druid's dire bear has already been spider climbing.

I'm actually picturing a white horse with a rainbown colored mane. With a little girl and a talking cotton ball on its back. :)
Rainbow Brite...Multiclassed Half-Celestial Paladin/Sorceror?

If a horse couldn't spider climb because of it's lack of hands. . . that means a Spider couldn't spider climb either. I wouldn't consider that a particularly reasonable interpretation.

Well, spiders don't actually climb using Spider Climb, they climb using the Climb skill. But I agree, it would be an unreasonable interpretation.

Definitely have to agree with CZ here.

Normal animal would neither understand the possibility of, nor have any inclination to climb up walls and ceilings. To them, it's not on their list of Things Horses Do.

So unless it's awakened, extraplanar (and thus possessed of a higher-than-animal int), etc etc, you're going to either have to Speak with Animals, or else Wild Empathy/Handle Animal your balls off in order for that horse to start making use of the spell effect its been given.

My druid trained his wolf companion to spider climb by using it himself and climbing a wall, then using the Come command to get the wolf to follow.

Ever see a dog put their front paws on a tree when they've treed something? Or even run and/or jump up the tree as far as possible? Same thing; once the wolf realized his paws would stick to the wall he was able to without too much trouble. Or how about dogs that climb ladders.

Of course, Speak with Animals made it easier and would probably be required to get the horse to understand what you want it to do, since rearing up to place its hooves against a wall probably isn't considered normal behavior for a horse.

Then again, I have seen horses that will rear up on their hind legs to get at leaves or fruit from trees. If you had something the horse wanted badly enough and you kept it just out of reach up the wall from it, it might try to rear up and get it. It might even be so focused on getting the treat that it wouldn't even notice right away that it wasn't on the floor anymore.
