Can you do this?

First Post
Let's say you have a Monk with Sneak Attack.

Can he move in to attack as part of his Spring Attack action, use his Stunning attack and if successful decide not to move back out of the combat. His opponent is therefore stunned and on the Monk's next turn he could choose to make either a full attack or a single attack depending on whether his first attack is successful using his Stunning attack option again.

If he can do this what defense does his opponent have?

I don't see any problem with this...

What defense does the person have? A) Don't get hit and B) make your save vs. Stunning Fist and C) Get out of there ASAP =)

I run a high level monk, and had thought of this before. The only problem is that eventually, that stunning dc gets pretty easy for most things to resist, since, as I read it, only your monk levels count towards the save dc. Throwing thief levels in there will make it alot harder, unless you are only looking for 1 or 2d6 extra damage. Also there is the ever present problem of actually HITTING the target :) . Anyway, I wouldn't base a character around this idea, at 17th level, I mostly find myself praying that the creature will role a natural 1 on his save when I try to stun, and makeing sure that I coordinate with the actual thief in the party just in case. All in all, the best thing a monk can do is make sure that someone else in the party is playing a druid :) .

From the SRD for Stunning Attack:

A decent Wisdom, say 16 = +3, Monk level 12 gives a Will save DC of 25!!!

Wouldn't that be 19?

10 (Base) + 3 (WIS) + 6 (1/2 of 12 monk level) = 19

One half!
That means monk level 12 (+6) + wisdom modifier (+3) DC = 19.

But you can suppose, that monk with lev. 12 should have some magical items to boost wisdom (at least +4 = +2 to modifier) and +3 wisdom increase ffor lev 4,8,12. That means:

DC= 10 + 6 (1/2 monk level) + 4 (wisdom) + 2 ( +4 wisdom magic item) = DC 22

That is not such a high score according to monsters with CR 12, and if I remember it correctly it is also fortitude save...

Ok, I think I am missing your math here... 10+6(12/2)+3 = 19 and unless I have been cheating myself for quite some time, it is a fort, not a will save.

Which I agree, is great, if you happen to be fighting a caster. Unfortunately, it is a fort save, so most creatures and npc's have high fort saves. At 17th level, with a +7 wis bonus, that gives me a dc of (10+8+7) = 25. Most everything you fight at this level has a BARE MINIMUM fort of +14, many much higher, and unholy aura's abound. Even wimps will have a 50/50 chance of shrugging it off.

Now don't get me wronge, Stunning blow has saved my parties collective butts a few times, for which I am very thankfull, but it is not effective enough to base a whole character strategy around.

Of course, the epic handbook may change this :)

Not my afternoon is it. :(

Ok the fighter now has a great chance of making his Fort :o save. Good Con bonus means his save is going to be up above 10 so should make the save more than half the time.

If I was the Monk I'd use my increased move to run away. :D
