Level Up (A5E) Can you gain an expertise dice for a skill if you don't have proficiency in that skill?

For example, the Wilding Culture offers the following feature:

Beastwarden: When you have a hunting animal such as a falcon or hunting dog assisting you, you gain an expertise die on checks made to hunt or track. In addition, you gain an expertise die on Animal Handling checks.

Does the expertise die on animal handling check include proficiency in animal handling as well?

as far as i can tell there's no reason why you couldn't have an expertise die on a roll and not proficiency

You can, unless the feature you’re getting the exp die from specifically says you can’t, such as several of the rogue features.
