If I had a staff of.... magic missiles lets say, and my partner had a maximized rod, could we use the two together and create maximized magic missles?

No, that -specific- combination will not work, for multiple reasons.

One, the Rod of Maximise specifies it lets YOU cast spells under the Maximise feat. If you use a staff, YOU are not castign the spell, the staff is.

Two, once you make an item that produces a magical effect, you cannot affect it with metamagicks, unless those metamagics were calculated intothe cost of the magic item (for maximises Magic Missile, a 7th level caster, and a 4th level spell slot, would work IIRC).

However, it would be quite interesting to create a variant item that would metamagic spells cast from other items. A ring of wand maximization?

That would be a cool item I can see an Artificer creating.

Indeed, I think a metamagic rod that lets you insert a wand into the end would be quite cool....

As a GM, before I let such a thing be created, I'd require the item maker to have a similar feat themselves ("Maximise Item Magicks" or whatever), which would have prerequisites along the lines of the spell-metamagick of the same type, *and*, every item creation feat needed for the item to be metamagicked "after the fact" ...

... and then probably assess a minor subdual-based damage cost, say, 1hp per level of the spell effect being metamagicked.
