Hi Johnn, are any of those OGC? If they were I'd be all over them, but it's not clear from the blurb on the page.

The Encyclopedia is not OGC. NPC Essentials and Holiday Essentials have OGC in them, but I'm not sure what % it would work out to. The stats, tables, generators, lists and whatnot are.

Not much, I'm afraid. Then again, in many cases you'd be hard pressed to find good fluff as OGC.

Fluff is rarely OGC, regardless of source. The rules that are derived from the SRD are, as required by the OGL, OGC. The story, history, names, etc. are not.

More's the pity.

What about edition neutral stuff? I'm probably not going to buy another 3e book*. There's just no point, we're playing WHFRP right now and will be playing Saga SW after that, so that should carry us to 4e.

*unless it's high on fluff

Ptolus is $60 in pdf format I believe. Gigantic city, lots of interesting stuff. I'd hafta grab my copy ot see how much of it is OGC, but it's a worthwhile purchase. I love my physical copy tho ;)

But the biggest concern is getting strong Open Game Content, especially fluff over crunch. I want to buy the best OGL material out there. Closed material can be cool, but I've got lots of it and it only has so much use to me for my projects.

This is self-hype, but Justin Alexander -- the guy who runs Dream Machine Productions -- feels very strongly about making our products as open as possible. Virtually the entirety of all of DMP's books are designated OGC, and the stuff that isn't is usually placed under a separate license (described in the book) that requires nothing except an explicit creative credit on the cover and/or title page.

For example, here's the relevant legal stuff from our most recent book The Black Mist:

The Black Mist said:
DESIGNATION OF OPEN CONTENT: All text.

DESIGNATION OF PRODUCT IDENTITY: The following items are designated as Product Identity in accordance with Section 1(e) of the Open Game License, version 1.0a: “Black Mist”. Any and all Dream Machine Productions logos and identifying marks and trade dress, including all product names, product line names, cover design, and lay-out.

SEPARATE LICENSE: Permission is granted to use the term "Black Mist" if the following declaration is made on either the title page, front cover, or back cover: "The Black Mist is featured in The Black Mist, an adventure by Justin Alexander and Dream Machine Productions. Used with permission.”

If you're looking for fluff over crunch, then you'll want focus on the City Supplements and not so much on the Rule Supplements. ;)
