Can't choose a backup PC

I'm Fighter 2/FS 8. It hurts being a few spell levels down, but the spell compendium gives you access to spells that really make a difference. I love the vigor spells. Best out of combat, but during combat it can guarantee a person that goes down doesn't bleed out if we can't get to them. Mass Lesser vigor on 4 people and I heal (with the improved healing) 7pts in the first round and 1/round for the next 17 rounds. That's 96pts of healing (24x4 people). As I mentioned before, close wounds is a life saver. Once you hit 4th level spells, I recommend lesser holy transformation if you already have a strength boosting item/bulls strength going. Since they are holy bonuses. Plus you get dark vision and flight. I think a lot of the healing power comes from the spontaneous casting. I've been in a few fights where I've started burning 3rd level spell slots to cast my 2nd level close wounds. I have a belt of giant strength +4 so when I got access to 4th level spells I went with lesser divine transformation (SC) over divine power (PHB). Divine power will increase your BAB a couple of points, but the flight, dark vision, change to type outsider and bonus to fort saves is more effective to me.

I would recommend a human paragon 3/favored soul X. You get the two free feats and the +2 to any ability really helps overcome the MAD the favored soul suffers from. Granted you don’t get the heavy armor proficiency with that. But medium armor isn’t too far behind. But, if you are going to be a healer/self buffer, then you really don't need to worry about upping your save DC's so that helps. You'll effectively be two levels behind the cleric in what spells you have access to and one level behind in casting power. But the bonus skill points, feats and ability score boost really makes up for it.

If you do want the cleric route, then I would recommend maximize spell, divine metamagic (maximize spell) and extra turning. This will let you really pump out the healing during those critical moments. If it was me, I would probably still take 3 levels in human paragon for the +2 to a stat, extra feat and extra skill points. Starting with a 16 wisdom, you could have a 20 by level 8 before any magic was applied.

If you guys need a damage sponge, I recomend a Knight (PH2). They focus on defense what barbarians do for offense.

Stuff you can do: make all the areas you threaten difficult terrain, thus denying enemies the ability to take 5' steps there, thus denying them full attacks and exposing them to AOOs if they close with your party.

Wear heavy armor with no penalty to movement.

Issue a challenge to draw aggro from enemies. At first, seems really like a dumb idea... the ability to make all the enemies swarm you. until the enemy wizard has 4 hp left and will most likely teleport away this turn... until you challenged him and made him stick around to magic missile you instead so your friends could kill him.

I'd take one level cleric for Favored Soul. Gives you domain abilities AND turn undead for Divine Feats. Two things a FS is missing dearly.

Or he could just take the Sacred Exorcist prestige class, which has easy entry requirements and grants Turn Undead at first level. That way, he never loses spellcasting progression.

For some reason I had Dragon Shaman/ Favored Soul in my head and couldn't figure it out - hence the stoopid question :)

Maybe I'll make both an FS, a Crusader and a Sorceror then toss a D3 :)

4th level warlock can and so can a 13th level Artificer (Eberron settign).

There was context to that post. He said a sorceror, or a dragon shaman/sorceror. Given that context, you can't take 10 with use magic device.

Well, seeing as I'm playing RHoD . . .

a sorcerer, with fireball and dispel magic. Those two spells will save your party's butt. I dunno, maybe it's just my GM who wants to always have dragons cast mage armor and shield as their first two actions in a fight, but hitting AC 32 is pretty bleeping hard at 9th level. Plus, you're fighting an army. Refusing to take fireball is tantamount to a sin.

Cross-class ranks into use magic device, so with a decent Charisma you should be able to take 10 out of combat with cure wands. I promise you, if you're killing the bad guys fast enough before they can drink their healing potions, you'll never want for healing supplies.

Actually, if you're 7th level? Dragon shaman 1/sorcerer 6. Get fireball first.

Strongly suggest: single-class, or aimed at a PrC which requires and validates your multi-classing.

Just pick something and pimp it out. That party will benefit greatly from a Sorcerer, a Cleric, a Druid or a Bard; they'll get along fine with a Dragon Shaman, Warlock or Dragonfire Adept; they'll also succeed well with a Warblade, Crusader or Swordsage. You just can't go wrong. So pick something and go.

Roll dice to help you choose. Perhaps roll up your stats, and then pick your class based on those?

Cheers, -- N

PS: Happy to help you pimp out whatever you choose... I just don't think it's possible to sell someone on a character concept. :)
