D&D 5E Cantrip damage by level

Sure this has been answered on another thread/Tweet/errata etc, so sorry if this is redundant but do you use your overall level or caster level to determine damage, i.e. Ray of Frost increases to 2d8 @ 5th level: can my level 4 Ftr MC into Wiz @ level 5 and still do 2d8?

Overall level, as clarified on Twitter and Sage Advice.

Use your total level.

Whether you're a multiclass fighter 2 / wizard 3, or simply a wizard 5, or even a fighter 5 who somehow got ahold of a cantrip through a race or feat or something, you are level 5 for the purposes of calculating cantrip damage.
