Career change

Carpenters in Monterey County make just over $28/hr

Nurses at the hospital where my wife works start at $25/hr, with per deum making just over $45/hr. Traveling nurses take in $63.

All these numbers are pre Tax.

Unfortunately the going rent around here is about $2000/mo + utilities.

I don't think you need a career change, I think you need a change of scenery. Where on earth do you live, NYC? San Jose?

Salinas, CA, Monterey County.

Its been by home for twenty three years. Love the area.

I am mainly a coding geek, cuz I've always been good at it and Loved it. I guess the two probably go together to some extent. After 15 years of it my brain kind of melted though and I took a break. Went to Europe and just traveled. Ended up teaching English in Poland when my cash ran short. Met a girl. Had a baby. Now, my dream is to just spend time with my baby girl. Unfortunately, as with almost every relationship I've ever been in, I have about 10 times the earning power that my gf does, and she's still got 2 years of college left, so that pretty much logically puts me at work. But my baby will never be this age again. I had a vasectomy, cuz I can only properly spoil one child. Really, because I think there are too many people in the world and especially too many uncared for children so if I want another one I'll adopt. But, what all that means is, I have one child who will only be this age one time...and I am NOT going to miss it.

So...we eat rice and noodles more than we like. We don't go out like we used to. But we take what time we can for each other and our baby. And in the not-too-distant future, she will finish her masters degree, and then I will be a full-time stay-at-home dad.

Oh yeah, career changes are a healthy and normal thing I think, especially in todays world.

Good on ya, mate!

Harmon-

You mentioned that you've been doing project estimation and such recently. Can you move from carpentry to more administrative stuff, such as this or sales or materials management? It may not pay as much per hour, but it's likely to be a lot more steady. From what I can tell in a lot of industries, direct experience will get you into positions like these moreso than education.

Would like to move into estimating (that is estimating the cost of building something so that a bid can be placed before the builder), but no one in the area is hiring or they have their own methods of bidding and they do not need assistance.

Its been some time sense I went through the schooling.

As far as the pay is- estimating doesn't pay, it requires very long hours and lots of stress (companies are made and broken by an estimator's numbers).

Right now I kinda need a carpenter job to help catch up on the bills. My wife would prefer that I gain employment through something I know rather then having to learn something new that will restrict my school time.

So carpentering it is.

What about become a home inspector? They make amazing money.

Home Inspection- Its one of my original ideas from years ago, most recently it came up, but like so many things it got pushed back in my mind. I guess I should reconsider it.

My present career is something that I got into because it was easy for me and I liked it a whole heck of a lot. :D

Sense March I have been out of work and I have been considering a career change, because my arm mostly. :(

What I would do, I am not sure, everything I think I would want to do is beyond my education level.

To those of you reading this thread- I think Harmon is asking us to say whether we have considered a career change or if we like where we are right now.
