cartography: craft or profession?

I think it works more like this

Craft (Map Making) - The character has the ability to draw a map of the places they travel well enough that someone else could find their way there.

Profession (Cartography) - The character is learned and skilled in all facets of map creation. This includes surveying the land, measuring distance, using a compass, etc. etc.

Knowledge (Cartography) - This character can read and understand maps and has become adept at the art of reading even archaic maps.

Doesn't really relate to money more so training.
The craft just draws what they see,
The professional has studied the art and become adept in all facets of the trade,
The knowledgable layman doesn't make maps but he knows a lot about them and it pretty good at deciphering them.

Reading maps should probably be either Knowledge: Geography (for outdoor maps) or Knowledge: Architechure / Engineering (for maps of building complexs).

There aren't that many skill points in D20, so you should take a fairly broad view of each skill. You don't need Craft: Blacksmith to make a weapon -- it is assumed to be part of the Craft: Weaponsmith or whatever it is called that is already listed.

Um no and no. Geography would help the person know the lay of the land, so looking at a mountain they can pick the easiest path, this is has nothing to do with reading a map. The second one, only if they are blue prints.

Exactly and if you look at my breakdown above you'll note:

Knowledge (Cartography) allows the character to read maps.

Craft (map making) allows the character to read maps and make simple maps.

Profession (Cartographer) allow the person to read and make complex maps at times working only from written description.

You may be only able to read and write generic maps but you know how and who to market to in order to get the most for your money.

That would be Profession (merchant).

I think my next character is going to have a few ranks in Craft (sandwich). Now I just need to write up a statblock for Perfectly Normal Beast...
