Caster level for paladin's detect evil?

A Paladin's caster level isn't 0 at levels 1 to 3. He doesn't have a caster level at all.

Like I say, looking for a consistent and simple answer, that sure sounds like "caster level 0" to me. No need to split a hair so fine just to go looking for rules contradictions.

I'd rule that he uses spell-like abilities at his character level, so a 10th level paladin/2nd level cleric can detect evil as a twelth-level caster. This fits the "equal to the HD" requirement in the MM. I could see (and would even likely use) a house-rule only counting actual paladin levels, but strictly speaking that one does not have support in the rules.

Spells are different from spell-like abilities as far as caster-level determination are concerned, so a definition of the paladin's spell-caster level in the "Spells" section of the paladin character description does not, for me, determine his spell-like ability "caster level". So detect evil, remove disease, summon mount, etc. are not 1/2'd in my campaign (in fact, Summon mount specifically mentions the "paladin level" as relevant -- which might lend support to the "paladin level" house rule as outlined above for detect evil and remove disease). Ymmv. But I think the rules don't contradict my position.

Does the Paladin's caster level for his Detect Evil ability have any effect other than making it more difficult to Dispel the ability?

Yeah - it's a caster level check to beat Non-Detection.

Thanks all

1. Okay, I think I'll use caster level for a paladin's detect evil = class level. I wouldn't use character level, since this would make the ability somewhat frontloaded (although I admit this shouldn't come up often).

2. I think I figured out that nondetection indeed does work against detect evil and similar spells (or spell-like abilities).

After all the description in the PHB says that among other things it works against "detection spells" and as the name implies, detect evil must surely be "detection spell".
