Casting Spells from Spellbooks

I'm not sure if it's possible to cast spells directly from spellbooks in 3rd Ed. If so, I can't find any rules governing it. I haven't checked 'Tome & Blood' yet, but does anybody know explicitly whether or not it is possible?

One of the PCs in my campaign (a Bard) recently found an NPC's spellbook and used 'Read Magic' to decipher the writing. He then decided, during a later combat, that he wanted to cast a spell from the spellbook. We looked around in the books for awhile in vain and, not wanting to delay things further, I decided to use the rules for casting from a scroll. However, I'm not sure this was the right call. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

No, it's not possible.

There are many reasons, but I'll just bring up 2:
* It's not in the rules
* It's less expensive than a scroll for high-level spells

CRGreathouse is correct. There are no rules for such in the basic WotC products.

The basic reason for this, IMHO, is that anyone with a spellbook can scribe scrolls from 1st level on. If you really wanted a scroll, you could have made one.
