Castles & Crusades battle tactics

Do these clerics take combat feats? Or pump up their strength? Because I just don't see how any class can melee better than a fighter.

They have the War domain (free Weapon Focus) and take Power Attack at some point in their careers. Str is usually their best stat after Wis.

They use divine power, divine might and bull's strength to improve their combat abilities. That's already more than a fighter, and probably better than a barbarian.

A druid doesn't even need to cast spells to get to that point. He's wildshaped into a dire bear for hours and already at least a match for a fighter. Then he casts animal growth. Then the battle ends.

Hirelings don't do you much good if you're fighting cloud giants that turn them to paste with one blow... Perhaps summoned monsters would be more useful.

For whatever reason, it feels like we end up soaking up a lot more damage in C&C than we did in D&D. I haven't pondered much on why, yet.
