CB's Grim Frequencies IC -- COMPLETE

OOC: Not sure if relevant or if it applies but don't we get AoO when the monster moves past us?

On the outside J.R. seems calm and collected, methodically moving to cover behind one of the stalls, as his teammates watched in horror.

On the inside J.R. couldn't not even fathom what it was he was shooting at. At this point the adrenaline surging through his body and his military training is what fueled him. Kill or be killed, survive at all costs, protect the team.

He squeezed off more rounds hoping to bring it down.

Feral saw the others charging in to action, heard the gun shots. He decided he need to do...something. He didn't have his gun. Staying low and crawling toward the doorway, so as not to get caught in the crossfire, Feral looked at it, both to get his courage back and to see if he could figure out something important...

Was the thing holding the girl against her will...or were the thing and the girl one and the same?

Death Otter grimaces at the noises from inside, but keeps her eyes on the corridors leading up to the bathroom, her gun held ready to fire. A corner of the back of her brain, some fragment not currently consumed with the adrenalin-fueled mad rush to live, gnawed at the existence of the creature in there like a dog looking for a bone.

"Pull back, out of the bathroom," Otter snapped. "Don't get trapped in there with it!"

(OOC - Okay, this is the round she tries to do Exploit Weakness. I will take CB's excellent advice and use an Action Point, which causes the check to succeed. This means I can't move in this round though, so I will instead Ready an action to fire if I see a creature enter my line of fire. Another hostile creature that is. Marks doesn't count. Probably. :))

Round 2

Initiative:
Death Otter 26
Cyril 25
Thrall 17
J.R. 14
T-dawg 12
Feral 5

OOC: Thanks, all, for staying in character and interacting with the appearance of the Thrall in ways well-deserving of accolade. gribble, Forged Fury, Rubberneck, please add +1 action point to your character sheets.

Otter snapped at everyone to get out of the bathroom. She eyed the corridors left and right, but saw nothing other than her own crew. So far, the thrall hadn't appeared outside of the bathroom, but she made ready to fire off a shot if it did, and stood her ground in F5. Cyril backpedaled away from the open doorway, to K5. [sblock=Cyril]Where's the Bluetooth headset? Is it on Cyril at the moment?[/sblock]

Inside the bathroom, J.R. stayed put in G4. Esmeralda must still have been alive because she opened milky white eyes and croaked something unintelligible at J.R.. The thrall's hold on her tightened; J.R. could see that most of Esmeralda's upper torso had been subsumed by the creature. Only the girl's head was now visible. One large and one smaller tentacle whipped through the air and slapped at J.R., but both missed. J.R. squeezed off a shot on his downbreath, but missed. The bullet smacked into the tile wall behind the thrall, breaking the tile. The thrall reacted to J.R.'s close range shot by lurching its large tentacle at him, but missed (to quote hafrogman in another game, FMD! :))[sblock=J.R.]The thrall got an AoO because J.R. fired a ranged weapon within the thrall's reach.[/sblock]

T-dawg barreled into the bathroom, to H4. His face pure steel, he tried to grab hold of Esmeralda. He shot his arm forward through the mass of wriggling tentacles and successfully grasped Esmeralda by the last bit of her he could, her neck and head. The rest of her was already inside the thrall. T-dawg pulled on Esmeralda, and managed to get a shoulder free. Her shoulder was badly mangled and bloody, the skin was pock-marked and pitted, as if eaten by acid.[sblock=ALL]T-dawg has grabbed Esmeralda and has a hold on her. If he wants to continue trying to free Esmeralda in subsequent rounds, please have him move into the thrall's square (this movement is free and doesn't count as part of T-dawg's movement for the round), and attempt to break the thrall's pin on Esmeralda by making one opposed grapple check. The thrall is size large, so it'll get +4 to its check (this might be a good time for T-dawg to use another action point). So long as T-dawg is grappling the thrall, the thrall will lose its Dexterity bonus to Defense against attacks made by the others (but will still get its Dex to Def for attacks made by T-dawg), and the thrall will be unable to move.[/sblock]

Feral low-crawled back down the hallway until he reached the open doorway. He stopped in G5, and took a good hard look at the thrall. It appeared that the thing had mostly absorbed Esmeralda into its body, but T-dawg was actively yanking on the girl to try to free her. Esmeralda, or what was left of her, was still conscious, but she wasn't struggling to get free. Her eyes, which were open and staring at J.R., had blanked over and were a queer white.

OOC: End of Round 2. Start of Round 3. Please post at will, I'll resolve in init order.

GM: Thrall -4/__ hp

Feral stood and moved in to the room, helping T-Dawg to pull the girl...or what was left of her...free.

OOC: Aid Another action or joining the grapple or however that works. Grapple rules are confusing. :P

Something pings in Otter's brain; the thrall has rubbery skin. A bullet isn't likely to affect the thrall's body and tentacles nearly as well as a slashing weapon. If only she had a Wusthof 10" chef's knife. Or a bastard sword like the one she saw at the renaissance festival that one time! Or a katana...sweet merciful Jesus, what she could do with a katana! Also, Otter has a pretty good inkling that despite the creature's fearsome tooth-filled maw, a bullet in its mouth to its brain would probably do more damage than just firing willy nilly at the beast's body. The problem, however, is how to aim? And how to overcome the cover the thrall's tentacles give its maw?

GM: Called shot to hit the thrall's "head": Make an attack roll with a ranged or thrown weapon at a -10 penalty. A successful roll against the thrall's AC results in a critical hit, and the attack will ignore the thrall's damage resistance. A called shot provokes an attack of opportunity.
