D&D 5E CB's Stonefast IC -- COMPLETE

Having reached partial cover behind the mostly-open door, Guran nods to Roscoe behind him and draws a handaxe. He quickly decides he doesn't like spiders, and doesn't know if the spider belongs to the orcs and is rebelling against being saddled, or if the orcs and the spider are blood enemies. He doesn't want to find out: he wants the spider dead so its loyalties won't be a factor; however, he also doesn't want to miss, and he might miss the spider because it is behind Orc #2 from where Guran lurks. He throws the handaxe as an attack at Orc #2, for being in the way.

OOC: Crit! (Again?) That's a lot of damage already, but here are more damage rolls to add into the mix for that attack.

[roll0]

OOC: Last post in this chain: I now recognize the fact that I still did that attack wrongly: if Guran has advantage from surprise and hiding behind a door and the distraction of his target, that gives him Advantage sufficient for Sneak Attack, but it also allows him to roll 2d20 and take the better of the two rolls for his attack roll. The second d20 wasn't needed in this case, but I should have remembered it. Dangitall! OK, more notes to myself in the text file, I guess.

SURPRISE ACTIONS

Spec, having spied the bits of rough grout, quietly extracted his 100' length of rope of the arachnea, and commenced stuffing the rope into the misjoined ceiling panel. The ceiling was ten feet high, which Spec overcame by using the edge of his shield to push the rope into place. The rope was sticky and held in place where it touched the stone ceiling, but as he worked it became clear to Spec that the rope wouldn't provide enough of a barrier to prevent the ceiling panel from being moved from above. The rope would, however, jiggle or go taut--providing advance warning--if someone were to try such a maneuver. The rope was plenty long. Spec could wind the rope about the panel and still have plenty left to use a lead through which he could perhaps detect a tremor were someone to attempt to shove the panel to the side.

Colden watched Spec but saw nothing encroaching on the party's space. For his part, Fulgrim readied one of his new spells but otherwise tried to keep an eye on the party's flank. Like Colden, Fulgrim saw nothing.

Guran flicked a handaxe at Orc 2. The blade sank silently into the back of Orc 2's neck, immediately toppling and killing the orc. The other three orcs in the room looked confusedly at their fallen comrade. The spider seized the moment and chomped down on Orc1 for 6 points of damage.

OOC: Will pause here to give Strahd_Von_Zarovich an opportunity to declare an action while the other side is still surprised. Forged Fury, what spell is Fulgrim readying (or was that just fluff)? Regarding whether Guran gets advantage, tuxgeo, perhaps it would be simpler if you state what you'd like Guran to attempt (ie: "I want to try to sneak attack Orc 2 with my handaxe. Do I have advantage or is the spider maybe the orc's enemy?"), and I'll adjudicate from there. I agree Guran would have advantage because he is an unseen attacker. Here, however, it doesn't matter whether Guran has advantage not only because of Guran's critical but also because the spider has another enemy (the orcs) within 5' of it; sneak attack damage therefore applies. Guran deals a total of 30 points of damage to Orc2.

OOC: Fluff, I don't think I have LOS to the room, so my current position wouldn't allow me to cast yet. With that said, I may be keeping my eye on that panel.

OOC: non-action to speak out of turn

Now that the party has lost its element of surprise, Guran raises his voice and calls back to the others, "Lurkers may be inside the doorway!"

Roscoe used a foot to nudge open the door a bit wider so he had better line of sight, then hurled a javelin at Orc3. The javelin skewered the orc through its gut, dealing 6 points of damage. All three remaining orcs and the spider turned and fixed their eyes on Guran, Roscoe, Spec, and Colden.

OOC: The map remains the same (see above). No one moved position. We've finished with surprised actions and are starting Round 1. Kobold Stew, you're up. I'll call people one at a time for actions.

Hearing Guran's warning, Spec does not move, the silk-like rope hanging loosely in his shield hand. At the far end of the room in front of hi he sees an orc (orc 3). He calls down sacred flame on him.

OOC: DC 14 dex save or [roll0] radiant damage.
