D&D 5E CB's Stonefast IC -- COMPLETE

OOC: OK, Guran cannot move through the square occupied by the elf.
We're cancelling the part of my earlier post that said he went through her space and threw his handaxe at the nearest kobold.

Finding himself unable to move through the square occupied by the insubstantial being, Guran backs off (10 feet, because he already spent 10 of his 25 feet of Speed to get to the dogleg; but he can't back off farther than that because Roscoe is in the way) from the square adjacent to her, in order to let other members of the party past him and through to her. Guran does not throw his handaxe at the elf, because he figures that doing so would be a waste of a weapon -- what with its potentially going straight through her without doing damage, and vagaries of that sort. . . .

OOC: The hilarious part of this: Colden never officially accepted the one weapon that might touch her -- the supreme Greataxe we just found. . . .

OK, Guran cannot move through the square occupied by the elf.
OOC: I think, if you re-read what I wrote, you will see that I did not say that. I pondered not replying at all to your rules question, at least until the encounter ends, but that seemed both shirty and risky. That said, I leave the remainder of the mystery to you to enjoy and to interact with.

OOC: OK, I really don't know what else Guran would do.
He's an INT 10 character, so he wouldn't possibly think that it's a Pixie glamoured to look like an elf; he would just never think of that. He would take it for granted that the SILENCE-casting figure is an elf, as she appears. I'm going to bed soon, but I doubt Guran will have any different (i.e. restated) action in the morning.

Edit to add: Call it psycho-somatic: He thinks he can't get through -- so he can't get through!

Edit-Edit: Dwarves are Medium. No Large creature could fit into a 5-foot-wide hallway, so the only way a two-sizes-different distinction could apply to Guran would be with a Tiny creature.

OOC: Just a note: Roscoe could use his action to Dash rather than Attack, which would allow him to move another 25 feet. Dash is an action available to any character. Based on how he described it, I imagine he would have Dashed to get to the dogleg turn, passing up Guran. Up to you on how to handle that since it would change a lot of things.

Very intrigued about this creature. As far as incorporeal, only two creatures in the basic DM rules are incorporeal as far as I can tell. Based on their entries, they can move through enemy squares as difficult terrain, but it doesn't say anything about the reverse. I think they're treated like normal creatures, so only Roscoe could move through the elf's square.

Fulgrim grumbled or, at least, attempted to in the omnipresent silence. With little else to do, he tried to think of what the group could possibly be facing.

Roscoe never belived in ghosts and the rotting Elf is probably an illusion the Kobold mage conjured up so he runs like a maniac, shouting without anyone hears his voice, his blood boils up as he intend to chop his way through Kobold flesh.

Rage Attack (1d20+4=7, 1d20+4=18) - Advantage - 18.
Damage (1d6+5=6)

OOC: Rage (3 Rages, +2 damage) - resistance to damage, advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.

OOC: Next morning: Restating Guran's behavior if he still has time to make an attack this round:

Guran readies an attack: If some target that is easier to attack than the 'elf' comes into range from around the dogleg, Guran will attack it by throwing his handaxe at it.

Father Spec is bothered by his deafness, but he knows enough about his own magic to know that a spell such as this can affect individuals or groups, and if it's groups, then there's an area of effect. He knows he is deaf, and can tell by the reaction of others that they are as well.* So he moves forward, trying to shepherd others with him. If he can do so (i.e. if in the crowded corridor there is room to move, he will have an action.

He drops the mace, perhaps near the dogleg, ensuring that there is some light by which to see. If he is able to move and gets clear, all well and good. If not (because he is mistaken or he can't move), and he can see a target, he will reach for his crossbow to fire (next round, since he's already interacted with an object, I presume), long shadows dancing from the ground level lighting.

* I note that with the observant feat, Spec can READ LIPS! This is hilarious to me, but he has suddenly seen everyone stare and perhaps start shouting. He alone knows precisely what everyone's go-to cuss word is.

[also, if you want a religion roll for knowledge of spells, here: [roll0]. Both Deafness and Silence are on the Cleric 2 spell-list, which he can cast.]

Round 2

Initiative:
Spec 19
Guran 18
Colden 18
Other creatures 16
Fulgrim 13
Chanter 8
Roscoe 6

Father Spec was bothered by his deafness, but he knew enough about his own magic to know that a spell such as this was likely to be silence, and that it targeted an area rather than an individual. Having used reason to logic his way through the puzzle, Spec moved forward, trying to shepherd others forward with him. He drew his crossbow as he moved south down the corridor. Spec came to a final resting position directly behind Guran, who refused to move for the moment. Spec dropped his mace near the ajar door, ensuring that there was some light by which to see. Long shadows danced at ground level, lighting the corridor in a play of magical light.[sblock=Spec]Spec knows the spell is silence, and he therefore also knows its range and typical area of effect.[/sblock]

Guran swore in dwarvish, then turned to face his colleagues. He couldn't hear anything, so he pantomimed at Colden, indicating that Colden should use his weapon two-handed to attack. Despite Spec, Colden, and Roscoe pushing and prodding at his back, Guran steadfastly refused to move forward, but he did raise and ready his handaxe. [sblock=Guran]So after sifting through lots of back and forth stated actions for Guran (totally understandable given the sequence of events so far), I still wasn't sure precisely what you wished him to do this round. I decided that your last statement--that Guran would ready an attack (but not move)--applied foremost since it superseded the other posts. I went with this action, particularly given your statement about Guran's Int 10.[/sblock]

The sudden silence scared Colden as much as the sight of his handaxe going through the elf creature. He roared soundlessly and charged up behind Guran drawing his flail. Colden pushed past Spec, Roscoe, and then past Guran. By the end of Colden's turn, he stood directly in front of the open doorway to the room with the stacked up furniture, and was 10' distant from the Elf. He surged forward, dashing toward the Elf and was surprised when he skidded clean into the space she occupied in the dogleg.

The Elf yielded no resistance but instead dissipated immediately, and Colden could see a pack of kobolds round the dogleg. Spec's wavering light from the mace bathed the reptilians in orange and yellow, setting their green eyes glowing in the dim light. All of them held light crossbows, which were trained on Colden. Four kobolds released a volley of bolts in tandem; it was clear they had been waiting for just such an eventuality. Two of the four kobolds loosed bolts that hit Colden for 11 points of damage. The other two bolts clanked harmlessly off Colden's metal armor. The creatures stood their ground and madly cranked their crossbows, loading another volley. One looked up at Colden and smirked, wickedness in its eye. Colden caught sight of the Elf standing at the end of the new hallway (5' wide, 15' long (not including Colden's space)). After a beat, he realized he could hear sounds again.[sblock=Colden]I was looking at Colden's character sheet in the RG, and inadvertently noticed that his equipment list does not include a flail. Please have a look and let me know if you think otherwise. Also, even though you did not explicitly state it, I applied the Dash action to Colden's turn. Without it, he would have had to stop 10' short of the Elf, unable to take an action (because flail). I figured it made more sense for Colden to charge all the way forward. Please keep the critical you rolled for this round and apply it to Colden's next attack (in Round 3?).[/sblock]

Fulgrim grumbled or, at least, attempted to in the omnipresent silence. With little else to do, he tried to think of what the group could possibly be facing. He realized that silence had been cast. While he stood in the junction of the t-intersection mulling the use and application of magic, his colleagues moved forward down the corridor. Guran stayed put, but Colden and Roscoe moved forward at a near run. The intrepid Father Spec likewise trekked down the corridor, though he stopped directly behind Guran. Fulgrim closed the gap between himself and Spec by striding forward 25' on stout dwarven legs. The movement put him very near to the center of the corridor.

The Elf, who was no longer at the dogleg but instead out of everyone except Colden's sight, pointed at Colden and spoke a soft singular word that Colden didn't discern. She pointed at the Iluskan battlemaster; a flash of white hot light streaked forward toward Colden, who dodged at the last moment. The bolt of light hit the wall behind Colden in the corridor, sending shards of fragmented stone raining in a cascade. A loud whizz like a screeching firecracker reverberated in the hallway and threatened to split ear drums. The Elf stepped nimbly to her left and disappeared down another corridor, out of Colden's sight.

OOC: Spec and Fulgrim can make an Arcana DC 15 check to guess what the spell was that hit the wall behind Colden. The increased DC reflects the fact that the spell originated beyond your field of vision. Making the Arcana check does not cause you to lose an action or movement.[sblock=Arcana DC 15]Guiding bolt.[/sblock]

Roscoe never believed in ghosts; the rotting Elf was probably an illusion, and the first kobold likely conjured, so Roscoe ran like a maniac. He shouted, but no sound issued. His blood boiling, the Halfling barbarian flew into his second rage in short order, but was unable to dash past Colden. Roscoe made it to the near end of the corridor, and could partially see around the corner that a pack of four kobolds stood in another narrow hallway, armed with light crossbows. The four of the wee reptiles were busily cranking their weapons, readying another volley of bolts.[sblock=Roscoe]Pretty much everyone is falling victim to cramped quarters in the corridor, and Roscoe is no exception. He is unable to Dash any further because the next three squares are entirely occupied with beings, and a character cannot end his movement in an occupied square. Please hang on to the attack rolls you made and use them in Round 3.[/sblock]

OOC: Clarification to aid you in your plotting: In the corridor we have Fulgrim, then Spec, then Guran, then a five foot gap with no one, then Roscoe, then Colden (who stands in the dogleg). Guran is standing behind the ajar door (Fulgrim and Spec are behind him). Colden is injured but can hear. Fulgrim, Spec, Guran, and Roscoe remain deafened and under the silence spell. There is no Elf in the dogleg; she dissipated when Colden entered that space. In the hallway are four kobolds armed with light crossbows that only Colden, Roscoe, and Guran have seen. The Elf fired some kind of a magical bolt at Colden, missed, then fled. All corridors and hallways are 5' at the moment.

OOC: End of Round 2. Everyone is up. Please state your action and I will resolve in initiative order. And, may I just say, that a LOT of time and thought went into this DM post. I think I started it damn near three hours ago. If there are errors, they are mine.
