Central European History and Religion

First Post
I'm doing some work on my next RPG project -- a "factual" game set in the 9th century (ie. a game based on 9th century facts not modern facts). While there are many sources on Norman, Byzantine and Frankish religion, society and history of the period, material on the Slavs is a little scarcer (at least in English).

I'm also having some trouble fleshing-out the Avars and Balts. If anyone could direct me to books on these subjects I would be most appreciated. I know this stuff must be somewhere given the importance of Cyril and Methodius in history.

If people have sources on Slavic paganism, I don't mind if it covers later Lithuanian paganism. I'm just so short of data on any form of Slavic paganism that almost anything will do.

Osprey Press has a pretty decent book on Medieval Russia -- perhaps a little east for what you're looking for, but still very applicable. Dragon Magazine had a Dark Ages eastern europe campaign setting that was also fairly well done. It includes slavic and norse stuff, obviously, but also some turkish and iranian material, in keeping with a more Kiev centered campaign.

Thanks for this Joshua!

Could you tell me which edition of Dragon did this and I'll try to order myself a copy. If you or anyone else has the magazine, I'd be happy to buy it off you.
