So basically, no one else plays and it is a failure afterall?
No, I really enjoy the game, and I play it all the time. Chainmail was the first miniatures game I ever tried, and I immediately got hooked.
Chainmail is a fast paced game with a lot of strategic elements. Because of the size of the warbands you play with (3 to 12 or so figures), the gameplay is quick and exciting. Most games I have played have been complete in under an hour.
Furthermore, because it takes relatively few models to field a strong warband, you aren't forced to spend a lot of money to get involved. There is also a comprehensive rules document available for free download, so you don't even have to buy the starter set if you don't want to.
Recently, WOTC released the Chainmail Ghostwind Campaign. The Idea of the campaign is that your warband is questing after a legendary magical weapon, used by Stratis, the god of war. As you search for the weapon, your warband leader can level up and you can gain magical weapons.
As far as how well the game is doing, I don't know. The Wizards people say that it is doing well--selling beyond their initial expectations. My local store seems to be selling a lot of the minis as well. Others speculate that Chainmail is doomed to failure, though I think these folks tend to be the "sky is falling" types.
And, of course, the minis are really cool (IMO).
So, in summation, Chainmail is an excellent miniatures game; you should try it and see if you like it.
