Chalice of Blessing

A Chalice of Blessing is an ornate goblet consecrated to a deity. Its powers may be invoked by any follower of the deity who has the Bless spell on their divine spell list (e.g. cleric, paladin, or adept). Such a follower is recognized as a "Priest of the Chalice" by the goblet.

When held by a priest of the chalice, any liquid poured into the goblet is transmuted into fine red wine (removing any impurities or poisons which may have existed). The wine must be drunk directly from the goblet; if it is removed in any other manner it reverts back to its original state.

In addition, a priest of the chalice may lead a ritual of blessing. The priest fills the goblet with holy water (which is transmuted to wine) and casts a single bless, aid, or prayer spell upon it. The spell does not take effect as normal; instead it is stored within the goblet until invoked later. Once the spell is cast, a number of participants up to twice the priest of the chalice’s level (including the priest) may each take a sip of the wine. Only levels in classes which would enable one to be a “priest of the chalice” are counted. It takes one round per participant to perform the ritual plus the normal time to cast the spell. The ritual may be performed only once in a day.

After the ritual is completed, any of the participants may call upon the chalice’s deity (command word trigger: a standard action, no AoO) to invoke the power of the stored spell. When so invoked, the spell is expended and takes effect immediately upon all participants as if just originally cast. Additionally, the bonuses to die rolls are doubled (to +2 for all spells), and the temporary hit points for the aid spell are maximized. It affects all participants regardless of their physical proximity so long as they are on the same plane of existence. The goblet does not need to be in the invoker’s possession to call upon its power.

If not expended, a spell will stay stored until the priest of the chalice prepares spells for a new day. At that time, the priest may extend the power of the ritual for another day by sacrificing a spell slot of the same level as the spell currently stored. This may be repeated indefinitely so long as the stored spell has not been expended.

While the spell is stored, a successful dispel magic upon the chalice will prevent the stored spell from being invoked while the goblet’s magic is suppressed, and a successful dispel magic on any given participant will dispel the ritual’s effect for that individual. While the spell is stored, all participants radiate a moderate evocation aura; once it is invoked, the participants’ auras change to faint enchantment (the aura of each spell) for the spell's duration.

Moderate evocation and faint transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, Bless, Imbue with Spell Ability, Purify Food and Drink; Price 3500 gp.

Benefits:
* Allows participant other than caster to trigger spell.
* Uses command word trigger (no AoO).
* Participants do not have to be physically close to caster to receive benefit.
* Devious parties may use item as ad-hoc instant alert item.
* Die roll bonus doubled.
* Temporary hp’s maximized (average of +4 hp benefit/participant).

Cons:
* Applies to only three specific spells.
* Participants must be predetermined (lack of flexibility when invoking).
* Requires spell slot to power (reduces caster flexibility).
* Material component (holy water: 25 gp).
* May be dispelled.
* Prayer spell does not affect enemies (effectively losing half its benefit).

Edited first post with my take on the prerequisites and price for this item. Please give your opinion.

I placed it as slightly less beneficial that a Pearl of Power II.

Thanks!

3500gp seems reasonable given the effect and restrictions.

I would also note that for the duration the ritual's participants (and the cup) radiate Moderate Evocation (as if they were under the effect of Imbue with Spell Ability) and that the effect is dispellable.

The CL prereq should be 7th (again as per Imbue).

Hmmm... I went with the 5th level CL prereq based off the example of a Ring of Spell Storing (which is a much more versitile and powerful item). It also uses Imbue with Spell Ability as a prereq. But I can see your point. We'll see if anyone else chimes in.

I like the idea of having all the ritual's participants radiating magical auras until the spell is used and having the effect dispellable; I'll add those.

I had considered an evocation aura for the cup, but I preferred enchantment and transmutation because they more closely correspond to the Bless, Aid, Prayer spells and the water-to-wine power.

Hmmm... I think I'll switch the auras on the cup to evocation and transmutation. For each participant, the aura will be evocation. When the power is invoked, it will be enchantment per the stored spell.

Thanks!

Secondary power

I'd give the cup a secondary power for discovering diametrically aligned drinkers and enemies of the diety.

If the cup is shared among creatures repulsive of in diametric opposition to the patron diety the water turns to vinegar (if simply opposed) or to foul blood if the drinker is guilty of some great crime* in the diety's eyes.

* note this crime must specifically come to the attention of the diety.

It seems too nice a religeous symbol to not make the most of.

You could also make it function as a scrying device but I think that is probably too much.

Sigurd

I really like it.

You may also want to put a limit on the time the drinkers may use the power. For example if I drink from the cup a week later can I still use the power? I would say 24 hours, thus requiring recasting the spell at least once a day.

Also only a single spell can be in effect at a time of the cup, which is not clear.

Otherwise during down times, I could cast bless have party drink from it, then next day cast aid and drink, etc. Then a week later during a battle with the Goblins evoke all the powers we drank over the week.

Nice item though.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I've made some major revisions (see first post), so please check it out and tell me what you think.

Looks good, though the text is not 100% clear without the Pros/Cons. You may want to clear it up so that the Pros/Cons come out better/clearer in the descriptive text.

I changed the text to specify the command word trigger.

Which other pros/cons need clarification?
