D&D 5E Challenge: Invent a PHB Class List with 6 Classes

well, top of my head...
Fighter (barbarian, fighter - multiclass with priest for paladin or ranger, multiclass with expert for monk)
Mage (wizard, sorcerer - multiclass with expert for artificer (or just have artificer be only expert, either works) or bard, multiclass with priest for warlock)
Expert (rogue)
Priest (cleric, druid)
...yeah i don't need anything else. i was originally gonna do rogue/craftsman, but then i looked up and stole the scholar thing. now, given, this probably isn't the BEST way to do it...but it does WORK. probably.

“It’s probably Matt Mercer’s fault.”
I don’t know why the word “Expert” feels qualitatively different from “Fighter”…maybe just history…but it does. I hate it. It’s just so generic and bland.

couldn't think of a better word tbh. same with fighter, also would've had a different word for that if i thought of it

Warrior -encompasses those who primarily solve through battle

Mage - encompasses those who primarily solve through magic

Expert - encompasses those who primarily solve through skills

Warrior Mage - half casters who solve through magic and battle

Warrior Expert - solves through combo of skill and battle

Mage Expert - solves through magic and expertise

Each one has variations within there, all classes I have seen seem to be able to fall into one of these six categories.

The Six Adventuring Orders

Order of the Manticore - Fighter, most fierce, excellent up close and with hurled weapons.
Order of the Thunderbird - Caster, highly perceptive, their voice carries miles.
Order of the Phoenix - Caster, amazingly resilient, can heal with a touch.
Order of the Gryphon - Fighter, highly agile, can fight up close but excellent at skirmishing and missile combat.
Order of the Gorgon - Fighter, indefatigable, they just don't stop moving forward.
Order of the Basilisk - Caster, beguiling storytellers, you can't help but stop and listen to them.

We've got 6 ability scores, so why not base it off that?

The Strong - Fighters, Paladins
The Agile - Rogues, Rangers, Monks
The Resilient - Barbarians, Druids
The Clever - Wizards, Artificers
The Intuitive - Clerics, Sorcerers
The Willful - Bards, Warlocks

I like the term "savant" or even "specialist" better than expert, but I also kidof prefer to keep the archetype that the word "rogue" suggests, "an appealingly mischievous person."

when I introduced someone to 4e many moons ago they thought it funny that there was a 'fighter' for thaat reason
Ya, "warrior" always sounded like the obviously better name to me.

What's interesting is that the od&d name of the class "fighting-man", came directly from d&d's pulp inspirations. If you read, say, John Carter of Mars, it gets used a lot directly in the text to indicate a person of special character who is suited for war and adventure. 1e and holmes basic (mostly) changed the class's name to make it less exclusionary. And while that was an obviously good choice, it also leaves us with a blandly generic name that connotes nothing.

---

Unsurprisingly, my idea for the challenge (back on page 3) has "warrior" and "rogue" as classes.
