I think they're a great improvement to the default doppleganger, and hope to have them replace them in 4E (and have higher level ones work as regular dopplegangers), but I don't know that they need to be a PHB race.

I like'em. The shapechanger archetype is wide-spread enough to be in the PHB. While I personally prefer a leaner race choice (only humans, elves, dwarves and halflings), I think the changeling is generic, yet flavourful enough to be there.

Though I rather want a smaller choice with more cultural differences and/or stuff in the MM.

Cheers, LT.

The changeling is my favorite non-standard 3e race, hands down. It's one of those character concepts that I always wanted to use, but never had the right tools for until Eberron came along.

In response to some of the other notable threads today, I think changelings have a ton of potential to produce "first edition feel". They're creepy, sneaky, mysterious creatures, and they have a lot of potential for good roleplaying scenarios.

I think changelings belong in the Player's Handbook - or at least, I would say that they are something which fits perfectly into most fantasy settings. I think they work fantastically well in Eberron, but unlike the warforged or the kalashtar I don't think the changelings work best in Eberron - there isn't a setting where they work best, if you know what I mean. They'd be great in the Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk or Ravenloft or Planescape or . . .

You forget a "don't care" or a "beats the tiefling like a dog that craps on the rug" option.

I had to vote "no" because I don't want them in the PHB.

On the other hand, I wouldn't object to their inclusion, either. That puts them head and shoulders above the tiefling, who I actively do not want in the PHB (and who are, in turn, more favored than the drow, who I'd like to see excised from core, altogether).

I think the ability to change form (druid aside, with their mid-level thousand faces ability) belongs in a book other than the PHB.

I love:
- Humans
- Changelings
- Tieflings
- Elan
- Mojh
- Giants (as a Human transformational paragon class)
- Warforged

Changelings are in that list; thus, they should be in the PHB. :)

Cheers, -- N

I hope we, at the very least, see changelings as a PC race in the MM1. They are, by their very nature, easily explained in non-Eberron settings.
