I'd gladly add changelings to my wish list (hadn't thought of 'em before now):

  • Dwarfs
  • Elfs
  • Giants
  • Gnomes
  • Goblins
  • Humans
  • Halflings
  • Orcs
  • Changelings

- Giants (as a Human transformational paragon class)

Just out of curiousity, what does this mean?

Nifft's list includes the mojh, which is a race from Arcana Evolved; several races in that setting, like the mojh and the spryte, are races into which one can transform by undergoing a ritual, and have "racial classes" which further develop the racial features.

Presumably Nifft's idea would have the giant be a transformational class for humans, representing the paragon of humanity as the paragon racial levels from Unearthed Arcana did.

Yup yup yup, and the same thing for Elan, Tieflings & Changelings -- they'd cost you your 1st level bonus feat, and then some Paragon class levels to fully activate.

Basically, the setting would be all Human, but with things people made (Warforged) and things people turned themselves into (all the rest).

Cheers, -- N

That's a very cool idea :p

I voted "yes," but really, I can't say for sure without knowing what the space limitations are and what would have to be cut to put them in.

In a magical world with infinite space in the PHB, I'd want them in the PHB for sure.

I voted yes. I personally love changelings.

Although I think Shifter is a more appropriate race for the PHB. Easier to fit in all settings, and likely easier for more people to get into.

You think so? Me, I think changelings are easier to work into most settings than shifters, and I've seen far more people interested in (and able to get into) playing changelings than shifters.

As far as my actual vote, I admit I voted "no," not out of any true dislike for changelings--I like them a lot, in fact--but for the same reason I'd rather tieflings not be in the PHB.

See, I don't object to them being usable as PC races. It's just that, when something appears in the PHB, it implies a certain degree of commonality. I personally prefer tieflings (and changelings, except in Eberron) be a lot rarer than humans, elves, and dwarves.

But that's purely a personal taste issue. I won't actually object if changelings are in the PHB. I'll just tell my players, if and when it's appropriate for whatever setting I'm running, tha they're a lot rarer than implied.

The biggest advantage of changelings is that those who want to "retcon" them into their existing settings should have no problems doing so. They were always there but never revealed themselves (and conveniently avoided any "true-seeing" type spells from blabbermouths).

That said, I will say that if any Eberron race* is going to appear in the PHB1, I'd prefer changelings to anything else. :)

*(Or, indeed, any race specific to any setting I can think of off the top of my head, though there might be an exception I'm forgetting at the moment.)
