How are these spells chosen?

What are your thoughts on changing the spells listed in a stat block?

Does it depend on what the source of the spells are (clerical, wizard, etc.)?

For myself, I often change some spells, but try not to completely optimize a monster for "combat" only, even though many PCs are done that way IME.

How about you??

Well, the DMG says you can freely change a monster’s spells for spells of the same level, but recommends against swapping spells that do damage for spells that don’t or vice-versa.

One thing I always do (including when I write for publication) is point out the spell list as being "typical" and being explicit that they know other spells (and probably have access to rituals).

Also, I put most spells in an Action format if I can, but that's a different issue.
