Changing to another edition

A lot of folks here have stated that they stopped playing D&D when AD&D2 came out. Was this abandonment because the game changed too much, or because it didn't change enough?

If it was because the game changed too much, why didn't you stick with AD&D1? [I stuck with AD&D1 right through the mid 90s.]

If it was because the game didn't change enough, why didn't you leave D&D earlier?

And for those of you who moved from Basic/ExpertD&D to AdvancedD&D, why did you make the move?

Did anyone go from AdvancedD&D to Basic/ExpertD&D? Why?

I left AD&D when second editon came out because at the time I wasn't happy with what they were putting out game wise and I liked what other comapnies were more. So, I moved on to other systems.

But was your move because of AD&D2? Would you have moved on at that time even if AD&D2 had not come out?

Well, I can't say. I'm only 16, and my dad started me young with the origional d&d. I have just recently started playing again, and I got my hands on the 3.5 version books and I must say that I like them a little better. Not becuase of chang, no prolem there, but I like how detailed the PC can become with 3.5. Things becom a little more complex and a little harder. I like that, but I don't really like it when It becoms to hard to deal with, or takes to long to work with. I hope this helps a little with your delima, and as an aftert -thought, you might want to put a poll on here next time to see how many people play wich style.

Ya the move was because of second edition. We were expecting something better, they had avertised it heavily and made it seem better then it was.

Maybe the question isn't really for me, but in this case, I did leave earlier, and 2e certainly didn't tempt me to come back because it didn't change enough.

A thread I recently posted on here asked a similar question, and the synopsis was that the migration away from D&D when 2nd edition came out is largely a myth. You'll find a lot of people who were perfectly happy playing 2nd edition.

We partly transferred over from 1e in '89, the rules barely changed in 2e but there were a few good changes (less than 3e to 3.5e AIR!); but 2e never grabbed us and the flavour of the products drifted further and further from what I wanted in D&D, so gradually we stopped playing. I had pretty much not played D&D for 5 years when 3e came out in 2000. It was a flavour thing - Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Elminster, Spelljammer, none of that appealed, I had to buy BECMI D&D products if I still wanted the good stuff.

You'll also find plenty who did leave. These threads partially self-select, so the "data" isn't very good for reaching a conclusion one way or another. Personally, I believe a lot of folks did leave D&D during 2e, although clearly many moreso did not.

So, you were unhappy with AD&D1 (or becoming unhappy), and were looking for AD&D2 to give you a reason to stay with D&D?
