I feel your pain. But my boss telecommutes on Fridays, so I can do stuff without interruption at my own pace for the most part. ;)

Anyway, succintness, while one of my features, isn't always a virtue. Your reply is more interesting.

Why, thank you. Mostly I look at the stuff I type and just see it as rambling. Nice to know someone was able to make sense out of something I wrote. :) Don't underestimate succinctness, though--the direct approach is often the clearest approach.

It'd be nice to have a telecommuting boss. My boss isn't too bad about me being online. I work a job with a lot of very short deadlines, though, so when they come up I've gotta drop all else right away.

We return you now to your regular reading...

bah, look on page 1 of the thread i beat you both. :p

Essentially I went from OD&D (pre-AD&D) to 3e. See, I dropped away from D&D when AD&D came out, switching over to RuneQuest. In the intervening years, I've played under at least a dozen other systems, including brief plays in AD&D games, but for the most part I stayed away until 3e came out.

When the switch to 3.5 was announced, I decided not to make the switch; I am still very happy with that decision. OTOH, I did switch over to Monte's AU (though I have not bothered to upgrade to AE, so there it is again).

With other games I have sometimes switched to new editions (Ars Magcia 3 replaced AM2 and both were replaced by AM4; I will switch to AM5 when I next have a chance to run it) and others I have not (Paranoia was 2nd ed, no others needed to apply, though XP may change that, and RuneQuest stays with 2nd ed, plus supplements).

So I guess it depends on the system, who is around, and all like that...

I started with the Holmes basic set around 1979, but quickly progressed to OAD&D.

Over time I have played the following fantasy role-playing games:

(1.) OAD&D (1979-1984). (Also played many other games during this time, e.g. Runequest, Dragonquest, etc.)
(2.) MERP (1984-1988). (This was the main system for my high school gaming group. We sometimes played certain BRP games like Stormbringer and CoC as well, and some GURPS).
(3.) Rolemaster (1991-92). (My only real gaming during my undergraduate years -- a RM campaign run by a friend.)
(4.) Rules Cyclopedia D&D (1993-1999). (I only played sporadically during this time. But for various reasons -- namely a desire for 'fast and fun' games -- I mainly used the RC).
(5.) D&D 3e (2001-03; 2004-05). (I DM'ed two 3e campaigns, both of which lasted about a year each. Eventually came to dislike DM'ing 3e, because of all the 'crunch' involved.)
(6.) Castles & Crusades (2004+). (My current system for DM'ing fantasy campaigns. It combines the elements I like the most from both the RC & 3e. I still play 3e and RC D&D from time to time.)

Broadly speaking, I see that as a DM I have moved towards relatively 'rules light' systems.

I stopped playing AD&D a little before 2e came out. I realized I didn't really like AD&D, and preferred other games. So I played those.

Started with 1st ed AD&D in 1980. Used UA when it came out for the most part. The only reason 2nd ed influence occured in my OAD&D game was because several new players couldn't find a OAD&D PHB to buy in 1989. This opened the gate to adding more and more 2nd ed stuff to my 1st ed campaign. My take was I didn't like 2nd ed as TSR in many cases just pi$$ed in a good game trying to make it better and hurt it. By mid 1995 I'd have enough. The suck factor of many 2nd ed materials encouraged my decisions to leave RPG's for nine years. I looked very hard at 3e before getting back in to playing. My old players took one look at 3e and didn't much want to try it.

I DM a great deal so I went with the game I like to DM the most - which is 1st ed AD&D with mild 2nd influence. I think this was the best choice as my four OAD&D groups have a total of 25 players. I do not think that would have worked out well with 3e.
