Character advancement with a Prestige Class

Quick question:

I can't find anything in the SRD regarding this so I'll ask the brain trust here:

Can a character, assuming she meets the requirements, take a level in a prestige class, then later take a level in her base class, and finally take another level in the aforementioned prestige class? Are there general restrictions preventing the scenario as presented above?

Assuming no specific prohibitions in the text of either class, yes.

Yes. There are exceptions to this, but those excpetions will be spelled out in the class descriptions.
