I liked the idea of running a few solo games to get a character up to speed, but really don't have the time.
What I do is give the players an XP bonus (of 500 for 1st level and 300 for each further level) for coming up with a decent backstory.
Dying causes the player's next character to lose a level (or else my players would never use Raise Dead spells.
Retiring characters 'respawn' with 1/2 a level's XP lost.
However they can make the vast majority of this up by supplying a decent backstory.
