Character Concepts: Gish (F/MU) and Teleporter Mage

Hey look, a fray! Ima jump init!

So in language, there is this phenomenon where words that originally have very specific meanings gradually acquire more general ones. "Defenestrate" used to just mean "to throw out a window:" now it also means "to get rid of." "Decimate" was the practice of killing one in every ten of a cohort: now it means generally thorough, violent behavior. It could be that these words get their new meanings from overapplication of metaphor, or that people just like general words better, but it seems to be a natural part of how languages develop.

So what's wrong with the word "gish" having a meaning that extends beyond a specific githyanki/githzerai archetype? It's pithy, everyone* knows what it means, and it is much more wieldy than some clumsy hyphenate.

*For the subgroup of "everyone" that reads ENWorld, of course.

I wrote a longer reply...and EN2 ate it.:-S

Gish: this is a bad, dumb, baddumb, expression. They used to just be called elves. Now they can be called eladrin.

Article: had its weak points (including typos and using enchanted and delightful too close together, or at all). Yet I look forward to more.

Pics: overall good, even if the second one is a half-elf (a natural multi-classer after all).

It seems someone with more time than either of us has done this work already: Detailed Gish Critique.

Heh. That's the beauty of the internet. Someone always has more time than me. A lot more time. I mean a lot, lot more time.

The only problem with a sarcastic and only minimally justified analysis like that I don't know if I trust it. I've seen way too many 'this sucks or is unbalanced so bad I can't even believe it' arguments over the years to always believe them (mystic theurge comes to mind). In order to see if I agree, I'd have to have more time to go over it.

Darn it. I'm stuck in a loop. Need. More. Time.

Hehe.

Overall I liked the article as it exposed me to some of the multiclassing tricks.

But the warrior-wizard one really torques me and I hope they fix it ASAP.
Peter's initial stance that the character is sword-and-wand... makes sense (and the art supports it) but then he gives the character a heavy shield and tide of iron. WTF? Then throughout the article it assumes the character is sword-and-board when that's convienent and sword-and-wand at other times. But I don't think the intent is to switch like that; rather, I think two concepts got mashed together and it wasn't caught in editing.
Also, the paragon path states Spiral Tower but then goes on to ignore that and build him as a multiclass paragon.

Please edit the article and repost, as I'd really like to see how this character was intended to be built! I also agree that this character should probably be human or half-elf, not eladrin.

That part of the article has plenty of errors, for example, how exactly does Germaine get the 17 Dex needed for Heavy Blade Mastery, or even the 15 Dex needed for Scale Armor Specialization.

The choice of Magic Missile as a wizard power for the teleporter is especially sad - it is like Eldritch Blast but does less damage. Any of the others is a better choice. (I suppose the range & force damage might help but really)

He does not address the implement/sword issue properly - it will be a big sticking point for Martial/Arcane guys.
I plan to house rule that a sword in one had can be freely swapped with an implement in the other - for light shield users this OK. Mind you quickdraw is pretty reliable if you dont want to move...

So a so so article - I only like the middle character in the first picture of the art too.

Actually, these concerns make Eladrin make a lot of sense. Rearrange the ability scores to Str 16, Con 12, Dex 15, Int 16, Wis 11, Cha 10 and you should be set... unless that borks some of the other feats.

I mean, that doesn't make the build right, but at least we can make it workable.
